Spyder Shutter Barrel

Have a mint, in box Spyder Shutter on its way. Was thinking about a new barrel on it, to replace the stock silver one.

Not super familiar with Spyders. Do these retain the ball in the breach (like a pro-carbine) or do they push the ball into the barrel (like an autococker) with the detent "nubs" just being there to prevent double-feeds?

I have one of the Tech T kits, so a new back would be an option, though not sure how much this gun would benefit from it (also assuming Tech T makes a Spyder adapter).

Was thinking about just an inexpensive CP or something period correct, maybe if I can find a cheap Dye that would work.

Thoughts? Or am I just wasting money?

Edit: just remembered I have that WGP "Tripple Threat" barrel kit in .689 bore. Will probably throw that on and call it a day, unless I have to worry about ball roll-outs.

Spyders are open-bolt stacked tubed blowbacks so the detent is there to prevent double-feeds. Open bolt guns don't generally have the same rollout issues as closed bolt because the paintball is chilling in the receiver rather than the barrel bore when the gun is ready to fire.

Stock Kingman barrels don't usually have the best finish, so upgrading may help a bit, but 99% of barrel upgrading actually improving the shot are perceived rather than real. Quality of paint makes a way bigger difference than the barrel. If you don't want to use the stock barrel I would personally grab a 1-piece larger bore barrel and just rock it that way.

Thanks for confirming my thoughts. I didnt think it would be worth it to do something like a freak kit for this gun. Just threw out the Tech T kit since I have the insert set, would just need the back.

if you plan on using a force feed hopper, you might want to glue and o-ring to the face of the bolt. this helps mitigate roll back and is less likely to chop/break paint.
the spyder came from a time when paint was a little bigger. when using a old spyder with new paint and a force feed hopper, the balls in the feed neck will be staggered. when the bolt moves forward, it could clip the bottom of the second ball and either break it or weaken it.

just something to consider.
also the mini reg is a pain and not known for reliability. Your $ might be better spent on a modern reg rather than a barrel.

as for the detents, make sure you get the right bolt for the detents you have. there are 2 kinds for the spyder in 3 different configurations.
rubber nip on left side
ball bearing on left side
ball bearing on both sides.

all three use a different bolt. i think the shutter uses the 1st.

You are correct, shutter uses the classic nub.

I was gonna recommend polishing the stock barrel with turtle wax and calling it a day. You’d be as accurate as it’ll get. But the wgp kit will do nicely and look cool so go with it.
