    Sheridan build along

Been down with covid for a few days and now that I’ve got some energy back but I’m still stuck in the house I’ve started a new Sheridan build. Figure I’ll post up my progress to maybe help some one out or at the very least, help pass the time.

Picked up a Pgp2k for this build. The exterior was advertised as nearly pristine and boy was it!

The interior wasn’t mentioned. I don’t know if it was oversight but man, it was like night and day. All three tubes contained some sticky, tenacious goop, green with patina. After many passes with paper towels and squeegees, damp and dry, the barrel remains like this.

Reckon a soak of some kind is necessary. After disassembly I scrubbed the valve until the free standing goop was gone and only staining remained. Took it apart and ground wrench flats to the center hub on my belt sander real quick like. I went a hair farther than I normally would, but I don’t have the energy yet to hand file without cramping and getting winded so that’s what I get for using powertools.

Next I went about enlarging the transfer hole in the cartridge casing. From the factory, the valve hole is smaller than the transfer port which leads to the barrel. In my experience this makes things harder to line up on reassembly and robs the marker of some velocity.

In a totally scientific way, I stick my meaty finger into the lower tube and push my fingertip against that transfer hole for a few seconds. I then use that impression to choose an appropriately sized drill bit for enlarging the valve hole, in this case 7/32”.

Now I step up, bit by bit, slowly boring out that hole until I reach 7/32”. And voila, it’ll breath easier.

A little bit of hand polishing and some of that discoloration is gone.

Now that it’s shaping up I rebuild the valve. Giving it a new everything.

the old valve spring is a bit stiff and I want to see what I can get away with here, so I’m swapping it for a new one.

old spring, nearly 9 lbs to pierce and fire

    new spring

Swab the interior for any residue or pixie dust from drilling. Hit the threads with a brush to do the same. Light oil on the orings, reassemble and we’ve got ourselves a valve.

Next I reckon I’ll be cleaning the tube interiors and removing that nasty black finish for the shine that lay beneath

Tossed the body into a big ol pot and boiled it for half an hour. After some more squeegee scrubbing the barrel is looking better, but not quite ready for the ball.

View from the backyard. Bit of legit patina left to remove in the muzzle.

Here’s the mean green we want to get rid of.

coat the insides of the tubes with the not so secret ingredient and wait an hour.

Rinse away the not so secret ingredient with hot water and you’ve got some serious saucy sorcery! Nothing left but overspray from the paint job.

                          so shiny, condiment craziness!

                          that’s all for today.

Great tip with the ketchup. For cleaning/ polishing nasty internal bores I typically wrap a dowel with some fine steel wool then chuck that dowel up in a drill and go to town.
