Sheridan Detents: How do They Work?

Obviously I know how they work but I'd like to know how the ball is retained on the wire and how the wire is retained on the body.

A small 90° bend, of the wire, on the ball end keeps the ball retained. Velcor's will keeps the wire retained on the body.

Years ago Craig said you can make these at home with a 6mm airsoft BB.

And the ball is pushed into the hole in the body by the wire (spring). The least tension in the wire is straight around the body, so the assembly just snaps in/on.

I hope the op wasn't about VMs.?

Nope, I was looking for how to do the brass variety. I'd like to do one on an SL68.

There is. The detent is just there to prevent double feeds that's why it's just in front of the feedneck, the widgets are in front of it to prevent rollout

Yeah, I'm just use to seeing the feedneck/body hole a little more visible/larger. Might just be the angle, of the picture, for the detent hole though or a slightly larger bead used. 🤷‍♂️

These really only work well on thinwall brass, ie: Sheridans... "Freak'd" Sheridans have too thick of a breech section (OD) for it to work well since the ball only protrudes about 1/16 of an inch or so into the breech normally.

I can't see it working too well on an SL68 but it's been a long time since I had one in-hand.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

On that note. I bet we could design up a 3d printed spike, cone, or finger dealy that acts as a detent for thick walled brass.

Edit: I'm thinking you use the same wire retention system, just change the ball to a spike with a hole in it.

Best bet with the SL68II is to message DeadlyWinds and have them turn down a Freak barrel.

That style detent really doesn’t work all that well even on brass. They pop off all the time and get lost. I guess you can make a bunch of extra ones or tape / solder it on. But the DW barrel solves a lot more problems when shooting modern paint threw a SL68. They actually make really nice pumps with a good barrel you can bore paint out on. DW will make one just email them. I don’t remember it being super expensive too when I had one made. I had a buddy print me a thin collar that fit inside the handle to take up some slop because the barrel is smaller OD. It’s not necessary but makes it feel a bit nicer. ( OD of the stock handle by the ID of the DW barrel with a lil room for Jesus so it slides nice) think I used a lil 100% silicone to keep them place.

Has anyone tried those cocker barrel detents on the SL68? I bet they would work good if they fit. Like the Freedummy ones.

Chuck E Ducky those can't work. There is no shoulder for them to wedge between. Plus the bolt oring seals around the edge of the barrel.

Yeah probably right. I know the DW barrels work great on them. Didn’t know you can buy them off the shelf now that’s cool.
