I've done it once on a Sheridan and once on a superbolt. Both times it was to gain 1/8" more hammer travel. The frame on the Sheridan was after-market, the superbolt was just the normal mess. Both had long valve openings of over 3/8". I ground 1/16" off the valve pin and added a dimple on the hammer of 1/16".
The Sheridan was mostly just short on hammer stroke, but the superbolt had a silly wide valve opening. It buys a little more spring power with that extra distance *without increasing the final compression force*.
