    KP Build - Ride along….

Alright, gentlemen…it’s been a while since we move had a good-old-fashioned Sheridan “ride along” build thread…so I figured I’d limp one along for your enjoyment!

Last year I “accidently” bought a KP off the bay. One of those, “I’ll throw a lowball bid on the table KNOWING there was no way I’d win”…6 days later I was notified I won the auction.

She’s been sitting under my work bench ever since. It’s about time I do something with it.

My original plan was to just get this crusty old girl enough attention to make her playable, hit hardware store, pick up some plumbing and make a SC feed and call it a day.

But first, I wanted to experiment on the stock and make something a little unique for it…

    so here we go!

As you can see, this stock is gross. I tried washing it, and this was the best I got…

so…I pulled out the big guns and decided to completely refinish it.

Sanded her down with some 120 grit, then 220. Taking out some of the gouges.

Then, down to the basement where I marked the outlines (in pencil) where so planned to start patterning the stock.

I picked up a 1/2” spherical bit, chalked it up and went to town on the stock. This took several hours over 3 days to complete, and my hands/arms hurt!

I missed a few times and gouged the stock a bit, but as I completed areas, I sanded them down with 100 grit to keep everything smooth.

I really like the way it’s coming along

At this point, the color was a little darker than I wanted, but I have to hit it with steel wool to knock the char off. So it will lighten a bit.

Now, so REALLY don’t like how spread out the “dimples are”. They seemed much “tighter” before I burned the stock…but the charing shows off the imperfections.

so…I went back to it and enlarged/deepened the dimples…

It’s called “unicorn spit” I picked it up in purple with sparkles…this stuff is a little intense for me. I’ll have to tone it down for what I want…

After it dried, I sanded it down…again..and removed most of the stain. Then I took the torch to it…again. It looks so much better!! When the light hits it, the charred parts of the stock glisten with a little bit of purple

nothing noteworthy on the process….just needed to use enough to build up a decent layer. (I used spray poly cause I’m super lazy) just give it a thin coat, let it dry, buff with “0000” steel wool, repeat. Did that 4 times until to get a decent base layre and then did the same process with 2 thick coats.

That one is staying, I’d really like to reuse it, but I have to figure out how it’ll work with a SC feed on the marker. Maybe I’ll do a short one, or maybe I’ll make it a rock forward…

As you can see, its finish is trashed (which I sorta like) but it’s a righty AND a direct feed (Boo!!).

                    My initial thoughts…..

Say goodby to the feed neck and get a SC feed somewhere on it (either LH, 3/4 LH or center)
                    Keep the pump handle.
                    Add detent(s)…not wedgets.

Refinish? Forced patina? Not sure how it’s look with that stock.
High Polish….maybe…but a little fancy for me.

                    Add an external bucket changer?

Complications, that pump handle will need some severe modification if I want a full length feed

If I go to a full LH stock class feed (I’d LOVE this) I will need to re-drill and tap the bolt, and figure out a different way to retain the lug since I won’t be able to “rotate the bolt to get to the lug). 🤔

I don’t plan to go too crazy with it, I don’t want to sleeve (other than to cover up the old breech hole) it or torch the tubes apart for any work if I don’t have to.

Input form you guys is welcome…..

I'd say force patina with stencils. But that's cuz I wanna do that to something.Just go for a black hued patina to stick to team colors. It's also cuz I love the forced patina walsmas pistol I currently own.

I'd personally leave it right feed to utilize the feed port as it sits, and hammer some wigits in her. If you are keeping it simple.

As a fellow lefty, I resemble that remark. I just figure RH feed will play fine with a full stock as you are generally going to point straight down to rack a round anyways. Left would be better, just figured you didnt wanna squeeze that hard.

If I run the feed tube back, that would work well. I’ve had some tunnel vision already and was locked into running the feed up the barrel like a traditional Sheridan. That would alleviate the issue of modifying the pump handle though…🤔

With a stock, I prefer rock forward. Then you can keep it shouldered. Rock back forces you to unshoulder rack, reshoulder.
