    Sheridan Trigger Frame Restoration?

I've got one or two Sheridan grip frames that have the paint peeling off of them, any suggestions on how to repaint them? My first thought was disassembly, a quick pass in the bead blaster cabinet and then just rattlecan satin black.

They are potmetal, so do not hold paint even when well prepped and primed. I have thought about powder coating them in the past, but it will still peel eventually and the change in tolerance with heavy powder coat will be a PITA.

DocsMachine used POR-15 on a couple IIRC.

I think an epoxy based coating of some kind would work the best.

Question; can they be blued? From personal examination I know they can (sorta) rust, and my understanding is that if a metal object can rust then rust bluing techniques will work. Anyone ever tried this?

I know they can be plated if someone has the tech to do that, I've seen several examples on this very forum that looked quite gorgeous.

Honestly I'd rather just use a cocker frame or take a shot at making my own frame at that point

They're pot metal, so I'd say no.

If you're seeing rust it's from the steel components inside the frame - springs, sear, pins. The frame itself is a zinc/aluminum alloy.

Yeah, I used POR-15 on a couple, and I understand they're holding up well, but as noted, really, they're pot metal, and even chrome doesn't necessarily last long-term. Between paint, hand sweat, water from cleaning off the paint, and just plain humidity, no paint or plating is going to last forever.

For my personal Sheridans, I've simply adopted the routine of occasionally touching up the paint, or respraying from scratch.

Not all that much different from having to keep the brass polished, the bore clean, and the internals lubed.

I should strip some and see if they will accept nickel plating. I can also try the black nickel if it works.

typically I strip & use a quality paint, I've also sanded & polished them (the rouge wax acts as a protectant for a while)
