SpaceBox Build : (Morlock Shoebox with possibly more)

A little while ago, I got the bright idea to snag an old shoebox shocker, with the intention of making it a all pneumatic mechanical (with pump and full auto modes) cause that just sounded fun, and the dual solenoid design just seemed easier to manage for this purpose.

I was just recently able to get my last hurdle on the rebuild finished (the manifold maxflow was pissing air), and now that its shooting 10.5bps fa on the factory S/F board I kinda like it.

My nerdy computer side started falling down the custom board hole, and I became inspired by the Morbox thread (https://www.mcarterbrown.com/forum/c...lding-a-morbox) and just like that I threw my $50 in the ring.

I have several thoughts, and potential goals for this build:
    1. Internal grip block mounting for 9v and OLED
    2. Daughter board mounting of morlock
    3. SOUNDS
    4. Accelerometer
    Lets just tee this up with the following;
    • I'm nerdy,
    • I'm pretty good with a soldering iron (I've built some qrp ham radio kits),
    • I haven't done much arduino stuff (more radio stuff here around the TNC-P9k6 packet modem),
    • I have a 3d printer but I haven't designed original parts.
Overall I want to post this as motivation to keep moving on this one, cause it seems so freakin' cool in my mind, but I know there will be HUGE road blocks in skill, simultaneously I will learn a bunch more nerd skills. So F-it lets see what I can do here.

Lets address my first desire and hurdle, a very clean OLED grip install, with a 9v still in there (if possible). I like replaceable 9v batteries so I can just "hotswap" if needed. To get this accomplished I want to 3d print a grip insert to hold the OLED screen on the left side, and the 9v on the right side. This may also necessitate making custom grips.

To get this ball rolling I started with the simplest thing, I took a picture of the open grip space. This will serve as my reference for the overall modeling as I WECSOG (Wiley E Coyote School of Gunsmithing) my way though this project. The picture got dropped into Gimp (open source photoshop) to trace and cutout the approximate available open space.

With this done I imported the resulting outline png image into Inkscape to create an SVG object. I scaled the SVG to a very rough width dimension I wrote down this morning using a crap measuring tape (hack-tastic am I right), and then again imported that into FreeCAD. Once in FreeCAD it was just a matter of using the extrude tool and then export the shape as an STL file. Snag that STL in Cura, and once I get the printer back up I should have a piece to test fit in 55 minutes.

    A few things to note:
    • This is a super rough gen1/alpha piece for initial test fitment only (I will be very surprised if it drops in)
    • There are many other things need to finish this
      • Top hole pass through for wiring into the marker
      • shelf relief for the OLED
      • shelf relief for the 9v
I'm happy with even getting this far so quickly.

I managed to pull out all the sticky, goopy, and now hardened PETG from my last round of trials with that filament, and then discovered it had also clogged my bowden tube causing the extruder to skip since it couldn't properly push the PLA through it. Once that was cleared and I releveled the bed I was gifted with a test piece. As expected it didn't quite fit, but I was surprised how close it was. I'm going to need some calipers and then actual figure out how to use FreeCAD to size things to set dimensions. The adventure continues.

That's how it goes sometimes. "Hey! Look at all this work I did to get here. Oh. Someone's already done all the leg work."

yeah, but then I find FreeCAD is crap at importing SAT format models...

        #5
For the time being I have given up on trying to import SAT format objects into FreeCAD. When it "works" it loses certain planes and other objects making the model unusable. No problem we shall proceed with the manual method. I purchased a new set of cheap AF digital calipers from the Zon and sketched out a set of measurements that should help me to get my original model to fit better. Now for some additional learning, such as creating an original sketch or resizing to measure my existing object. Hurray for projects.

Want me to convert it to .stp and send it to you? Fusion imports SAT without any issues

Just getting back to thinking about this now that the Morlock boards are close to built. devilzcall I'd love a conversion of that grip frame file if you wouldn't mind. Thanks for the offer on that.
