Has anyone tried to use the Epiphany firing chamber with inserts on a mech Ion build yet? My thoughts are if the chamber is smaller, I can run a higher pressure and maybe get more efficiency and maybe even better consistency shot to shot. I would be relying more on the consistency of the air pressure and not on the rate of expansion of air. I've heard I'm better off getting a different regulator as the Ions reg is better for lower pressures. Even an Epiphany reg is better suited for 200psi and up. I also plan on grabbing a BOB body kit to make swapping chamber inserts easier. This is all just speculation at this point as I don't have enough air in the tank to start testing. Anyone ever try this out here? Would my micro lines blow off of the smav3 barbs?

Don't know about any of that but the microline part... Are you using cocker hose? That stuff is only rated up to like 80something psi, from what I've been told. That didn't stop me on my last 2 builds though. Ran both all day as a full field test and both never blew. Maybe depends on the kind of hose? Is it speculation that yours will blow off from other discussions or yours really are popping off the SMAV 3?Fred aka ChoSanJuan

I tried it... multiple ways. Doesn't work.
You can buy LP hose rated for 250psi, but it will blow off the SMAV barbs at 200ish, and you'll need at least that to get field velocity (edited for clarity) on an Epiphany.

Cocker LP hose is usually rated for 150-180psi, some to 200. I have some stuff rated to 250psi, but it's a lot stiffer than regular Cocker hose.
None of that changes the fact that at over 200 psi the hose will leak and/or pop off at the SMAV fittings, as they're the smallest diameter barbs in the system.
I'd be very surprised if you were running over 180psi into your mech Ion builds.
I've legitimately attempted an Epiphany build 3 times. You will not be able to get 280fps at a pressure low enough to stop hoses from blowing off.Comment

That may work... although you're seriously tasking the SMAV, as they're rated for a much lower operating pressure. I'd also be concerned about longevity, and of course the trigger pull will be stiffer as there's a higher pressure to overcome and switch inside the valve.
There are really no benefits to running an Epiphany firing can. Consistency is more about trigger technique and possibly running a QEV, to empty the dump chamber as consistently as possible... the lack of electronic control is the "weak" point in any mech Ion build, and any mech, really, that relies on a fixed volume dump chamber, in the sense that bolt movement, and thus dwell, is directly controlled by the trigger mechanism. If that mechanism is not operated consistently, you will see variations, some potentially larger than others.

On the note of clamps, a properly sized spring works well, slide it up the tubing. Put it on the barb. The work it over the hump on the tubing from the barb. But mech ions shoot pretty good imo.Comment

Well all is not lost. I do have an epiphany board still so I can still use the firing chamber on a new build now. I have 2 stock ions left so one can get the converted to an Epiphany I guess. It would end up being cheaper anyway since I really only need to source a reg spring from an Epip. Thanks for the input guys. Who knows maybe I'll come up with something crazy.Comment
