The barrel I use on my Blizzard, which is just a 98 in MCS clothing, is pretty wide bore. I'm still able to shoot it rather accurately so long as I feed it good paint. The internals are all fairly new too, so consistency is as good as it's going to get for an inline blowback. I'd make sure your internals are all clean and well oiled. Check for any scratches or burrs in the breech & barrel. Make sure your detent is in good shape too. If that doesn't help, try and go with a decent overbore on your paint to barrel match.

Like others have said, check the barrel for burrs, check the detent, clean the guts, then tear apart the valve if necessary.

I've never heard of this. My Pro Carbine shoots just fine with HPA. I know the valves are a tad different, but it's still a CVX valve. Hmm.

As much as people like to believe it, 98s are not inherently inaccurate. Check the mating of the barrel to the body, is the any gaps or misalignment?

I was wondering when you were going to pop in. I stand by the fact that 98 stock barrels are poorly polished and don't shoot well, but the platform itself is perfectly solid.

Good lord, the early 98 barrels were terrible. A kid up the street from me bought a 98 when they first hit the market, and I was appalled at the poor finish of the barrel, especially for a Tippmann. You could feel something like a grain to the metal in the bore, like it had been bored out but never honed. I always wondered if he got a factory defect or if they were all like that. While I am generally an adherent to the "A tube is a tube" mantra and forever trying to dissuade kids on Reddit from buying barrel kits for open bolt markers, the stock 98 barrel is on my short list of barrels that actually need replacement.

I would not be surprised if there were alignment issues with some 98 barrels. The barrel threads are incredibly coarse, ostensibly to make changing the barrel quicker, but really I think it's just so the body threads could be cast instead of milled. There might be burrs on the body threads preventing the barrel from screwing all the way in and seating properly.

Yeah I agree with you both, the barrels can be terrible. But a quick polish usually takes care of it, unless there is a serious flaw. My "not inherently inaccurate" means not that these are all peaches, but that its not a design flaw per se, more of poor manufacturing consistency. When the clamshells are made correctly, the barrel isn't sandpaper inside, and everything lines up like it should, a98 shoots lazah-tit-ropes.

Good cleaning/ polish new detent and a quality barrel will do wonders for a 98. J&J should work fine tho it probably large bore. Keep in mind it’s a labor of love because no matter what you do to a 98 it will always be a 98. It probably just needs a good cleaning and a fresh detent and make sure it’s put back together and aligned properly, Like others suggested.

Stock 98 and a5 barrels are not mirror smooth like most aftermarket, but I hardly believe that is the root of the accuracy problems. If Tippmann could noticeably increase the accuracy of a blowback semi by simply polishing the barrel, that's something they'd do. Same thing for "polished internals". The guns are over-gassed with blowback from the factory to make them reliable. Unless you are going to use a regulator and really get in deep with the blowback 98 with different valve modifications, spring kits and a whole bunch of hassle, I'd suggest just using a barrel that matches your paint. Stock 98 bore is massive depending on year. Put new springs in the gun. A nice fresh hammer spring that hasn't been expanded and compressed thousands of times and might be 20 years old is not a good foundation. I bet you're shooting about 220 FPS and .682 paint in a .695 bore barrel
