Tippmann TCR Breakdown

Picked up a Tippmann TCR and, as I am prone to do, I’m taking it all apart. While it looks to be nice and clean on the outside, who knows what horrors lie within!

First a quick look at the little details of this quirky beast!

Starting at the back, the TCR has a built-in adjustable stock:




This stock also has an adjustable cheek pad/ riser: is it useful? I have no idea.

Next quirk is the integrated remote line. It’s one of the most popular upgrades for a TIPX so nice to see it integrated. It hides in a little recess under the stock and with a little fiddling you can get it to pop out. To run a remote line you need to have a empty CO2 in the front chamber, just like a TIPX.




You can also switch between hopper feed or mag fed. It’s not an on-the- fly process though. You need to open the body up and flip the breech black.


Hard to see, but it’s current set to hopper fed, with the open breech facing the top:



When the breech if flipped up, you cannot feed mags as the mag hits metal:

The next neat little detail is the front air chamber where the 12g goes. It’s hidden behind the side rail at the front of the marker:



It’s cleaver design, not with issues. The 12g can be trick to knock out and I’d likely add a grip or hook to the rail to allow for easer opening. Tippmann designed this be used on either side of the marker, depending on your dominant hand you can have the 12g go in on the left or right. You need to disassemble the front of the marker to change it though.

Switching the 12g insert side is fairly straightforward, but you need to disassemble the entire marker to do so.

First you need to remove the front shroud:

Then there is a push pin located at the front of the marker:


Remove the pin:

With the pin removed you can lift out the rail over and see the 12g chamber:





If you want to change the access side of the marker you need remove the other solid rail, and flip the metal chamber to face the other side. You do not need to fully disassemble this to change sides. One the other rail is removed the metal piece freely rotates.

And with all that fun stuff out of the way, let’s crack the cover and see all what’s inside!



And it’s a mess! And this is why you always take markers apart after buying.

Just look at the caked on crap in this breach block:

After much cleaning, I grabbed some spare TIPX internals for a comparison.

Starting with the breach block. Note it’s first strike ready and has dual detents, unlike the TIPX breech bock:

Then we have the bolts:






Notice the inner portion of the bolts are different.

The springs are also different, with the TCR using a longer spring.

And for reference, here is the TCR’s valve, which is supposed to be improved from the TIPX.



The valve sits in the base on the stock and connects through the same tubes as used in a TIPX.

Finally, after getting everything back together don’t forget to put the feedneck back on the rail before putting the front shroud back on!

And just noting that the TCR is way easier to work on than a TIPX. The TIPXs like to “explode” when opening (and closing) due to the breech block, front block and bolt spring. TCR loses the front block and the breech block is held in place better by the body.

So how does the switchover to constant air work? Just leave an empty 12g in as a dummy, flip the QD down & hook up?
