SL-68 II operation different between markers?

So I have had a newer style SL-68 II for a number of years. Got it when they reintroduced them. Recently got my hands on two older style original run SL-68 II's and they will lock the hammer back while dry firing where my new style does not.

Was there a reason they made that change or is there something wrong with my newer style? I'm not super familiar with Nelson based operation so it's kinda foreign to me.

My understanding is that the older style should also not lock the hammer while dry firing - thats how I have mine set up - it does not fire well when it cocks while dry firing. Your pump arm length is to long - easy to fix and adjust. things that can cause this besides someone setting it to the wrong length are aftermarket barrels- some have no bevel in the receiver end of barrel or slightly different lengths, pushing the bolt back a little. this can also usually be fixed by adjusting the pump arm length.

I love the SL's and have spent allot of time and money trying to get them consistent with modern paint. - the kit sold by deadly wind gets you pretty close, but the biggest flaw that needs solving is a dependable detent system. paint is so small and the size of the chamber so big and wall thickness of the body so deep that this is a real challenge. I have some ideas, CAD skills and a 3D printer but lack time! I've tried all the other "fixes" - rubber bands, beads on rubber bands, wires and beads... they all sort of worked, but not consistently. I suspect some drilling and milling would also be involved. some day..... *sigh*

OK I'll check out the pump arm length when I get home this afternoon. Thanks for the info!

Nelsons need air to catch likely the older ones mainsprings are weak allowing them to catch.

My old SL68 is weird too when it is unaired. I can get it to cock back, and then the hammer and bolt stay connected. I can't even seem to get them to separate with the trigger.
Is this likely because of a week mainspring or is it also a problem with my pump arm length?
