    Model 98 PTP F/X project

I’m going to keep this one semi mech but I’m making some changes for the better. Some interesting things I noticed

    1. The nickel plating creates an ultra smooth action of the internals. It’s like super polished internals. Less gunk builds up as well. Don’t think I’ve seen anyone mention that so I thought I’d put it out there.

    2. The model 98’s hammer is 12g lighter than the 98 custom’s. 118g vs 130g. That’s without the internal spring guide and cocking knob. The Custom uses a light plastic guide that weighs 2g and the M98 uses a heavy aluminum guide that weighs 20g. Cocking knobs are the same and weigh 14g

    3. I modified the plastic Custom guide to fit in the M98 hammer. I cut off the stem of the guide and sanded/polished it. Then I placed a size 111 o ring over the plastic guide to keep it concentric. Works great.

    4. I located an old I&I Sports “lightened hammer”. It weighs 117g lol. So technically it is lighter but what’s really nice is the polish job I&I did with these hammers. Much better than I could do I think. I swear it’s plated but I’m unsure how to test.

    5. With the I&I hammer and the plastic guide it’s weighing 119g. I ordered a Rocket Cock and if I can recollect correctly the knob weighs 4g. So, hypothetically, it should weigh 123g. By comparison, the low pressure kit hammer weighs 118g. So a super easy lightened hammer mod!

Everything is accounted for except the 10” ARMSON barrel (do these exist?) and the PtP aluminum front bolt. I put a Killhouse front bolt with an internal o ring in and sanded/polished the powertube. TechT lightened valve spring as well. Polished the linkage arm and I’ve got a Maddmann spring kit coming to change out the trigger and sear spring. I dropped on a heavy RAP4 main spring but I’ll probably trade that out for the heavy Maddman.

APP Widow Maker barrel is on the way too. I had no idea these barrels are .685. That’s a steal for $20

The ten inch armsons exist, but aren't easy to locate

Ooo do those come in 10"? All the other tighter bore barrels for 98s are too long or too short for my taste.

I think they are 12” only. I have to check

Yeah, they only had 12" but I pulled the trigger anyway.

My buddy’s been shooting one of these for many moons. His is all kitted out, and has the vert adapter with intruder, powwrfeed, and rva. Neat piece indeed.

I’ve got everything but the barrel and front bolt. I think I’m going to sell the intruder after I rebuild it

I was looking at friction coefficient tables and polished and lubricated nickel plating smokes polished aluminum. Even if I took a 98 and polished the internals to a mirror finish and oiled it the nickel plating smokes it. Can’t wait to shoot this one.

Making me jealous. How much would it be to nickel plate 5 Tippmanns? Lol

These were a factory done option I don't think he replated them

The hammer insert idea is pretty clever. I’m concerned about the 111 oring over extended use but if it holds up that’s a fantastic mod.

Re: nickel’s low friction, yeah that was a big thing with cockers. Not talked about much anymore but they chrome plated bolts in the late 90s/early 2000s before switching to delrin for that reason. Same with trigger plates.

Anyway, very cool build! We just need some fully assembled pics!

Should be done in a week or two. I’m not doing anything crazy to it…… yet. I’ll probably Ebolt it in the future but that’s definitely not on the radar right now.

I hear you on the 111. I’m going to dremel out some o ring grooves for sure so it doesn’t get ejected. I’m concerned about that

Had a bunch of parts come in today. Swapped the trigger and sear spring out for lighter Maddmann springs. Trigger pull is super light. Rocket cock knob is 4g and the hammer, fully assembled, comes out at 123g. I had to sand and polish the area where the cocking knob contacts the internal channel of the Rocket cock, too much friction.

Ive never been a fan of the side cockers because of this. I still need to sand and polish it a little more. Only reason I’m using it is because I want to protect the internal nickel plating as much as I can.

APP .685 Widow Maker barrel. Gonna have to polish the internal bore a little but it’s a good barrel. I also got a 32 Degrees chrome drop and on/off ASA I need to put on.

All in All it’s going smooth. A lot less intensive of a build than I typically do which is much needed change of pace.

Done. Gonna go the Myrkul way and try and drop the main spring to the lightest possible while maintaining velocity 270-280fps. No volumizer or super low pressure stuff
