Overrated gear

As suggested I added this to go along with my underrated gear post.

For me I going to garner much hate for this but the autococker. Don’t get me wrong there super cool and look to be a lot of fun to use. There a tinkerers dream and I personally hope to get one some day (always had mags). But performance wise they don’t really do anything better than the competition. They also need a lot off the showroom floor to perform at a high level. And there just over complex thus potentially being more problematic.

Like I said I think there cool and still want a older one for my self. But the love and more specifically the cost makes them a overrated gun to me.

Agreed, though I like the idea of the light weight of joggers on those 90* plus days. So I bought a $12 pair of jogging pants from Sam's Club other day that had nice zipper pocket. No reinforced knees, but with kneed pads on underneath no bid deal. If I end up tearing out the knees can get some nylon patches sewn in. $12 instead of $60-100 for same thing.

I really don't get the whole $100+ pants thing. My Rothco BDU pants work just fine, and I've been playing paintball in them for ages. A $13 pair of generic knee pads from Amazon and some slider shorts from my local sporting goods store offer sufficient padding.

We call them ballerina pants in our neck of the woods. All the new kids look at me with my "vintage" gear and say I need to get with the times. I also don't complain when I get shot near my junkle area because I've got good coverage, sans jock.

Funny, I find cockers incredibly simple, especially compared to modern electros or even mags for that matter.

Not sure about overrated but I hate pod packs, maybe it is my old, worn-out shoulders but reaching around to the middle of my back doesn't work for me.

Yeah, I’m a cocker guy. Tried the whole mag thing, didn’t like it. Could never fix a leak I had despite buying a AGD repair kit. Gave up and traded it for a cocker and lived happily ever after.

After that.... Any of the aka guns sorry fanboys. I've had several, and between the lack of performance, "send it to so and so to fix that" rhetoric and general bulkiness of the platform I never kept any. If you ask me they were already outdated by the time that they improved slightly in 2004. But yet somehow they're still Garner a huge following and crowd for something that was outdated basically by 2002.

One other good one I have an interesting complaint with are the current crop of overly complicated hoppers from virtue you know the ones that cost like $300 and have Bluetooth and programming in the yada yada. Why is it even something that's needed for higher-end equipment that is only ever going to shoot 10 and a half balls per second? They also have a very poor reliability record but that's to be said for everything virtue manufacturers.

Anything Sandana. Sold all my stuff as soon as I was aware people were paying absurd prices for it; several hundred dollars for ratty cloth pickled in years of my sweat. That was many years ago, so not sure if it's still a thing.

You lot think you've posted unpopular opinions? Heh.. hold onto your butts: I think anything made of brass - even nickle plated - is ridiculously overrated. If you would be so kind as to sling a variety of different rotted fruits and vegetables I would appreciate it. It makes the vegetable stock and sangria taste so much better.

So SMOOTH though and softer than anodized aluminum so minimal wear and tear on the anno parts. Other than this specific instance (and of course use in emotional allomancy but that's a different topic altogether), I actually agree with you here. The stuff is heavy!

I’m not saying it’s bad. I’m just saying it doesn’t deserve the unanimous, continuous circle jerk that it’s been the star of for the past year or so. I had one and didn’t hate it at all, it was just the Hershey’s bar of chocolate. The Honda Civic of the car world. Nothing wrong with it, but I sold it because it was boring.

I've bought and sold three (2 of which were new). I'd sell one and then say 'man, everyone loves this thing, I must've made a mistake'. Rinse and repeat and every time it just ended up sitting the gear-bag while I played with my phantom or cocker pumps. As everyone knows, they shoot great for the price but like you said they're incredibly boring; a soulless marker.

I love this kind of complaint. It's like arguing for analog radio because digital doesn't require manual tuning. Nothing wrong with it, just shows that the equipment has matured to the point of not needing a technician to keep it working as desired.

To echo what ECAP said- hoppers. While newer hoppers are much faster, more durable and come apart much easier, they are also loaded with features I personally would never use and are very heavy. And the CTRL hopper is way overpriced for what you get- close to 300 bucks & you don't even get a spring ramp? Virtue's products look good, but damn, do they drop the ball sometimes.
Don't get me wrong- the LTR and IR loaders are great as bare bones tourney hoppers. But when 20+ year old hopper tech can get 95% of the playing population through a day...

I generally agree but I think you’re really selling the QOL features short. Every time I come back from the field, I pull a tab to take the shell in half, pop the electronics out (magnet), pop the drive cone out (magnet), and rinse everything in hot water. It literally takes 40 seconds to disassemble and clean the whole hopper.

Compared with an old Halo or something? Nuh-uh, no way. Can’t go back, won’t go back. Worth. Every. Penny.

OdinBuilt I get that, but I don't think that's what he's talking about. I think he means features like the tilt monitor, and Bluetooth, and whatever. Who needs that? All I want is a field-stripable Revy, or similar, that doesn't weigh as much or more than a Rotor.

Probably most "modern" electros. The changes in feel and shot quality and efficiency and blah blah blah. Yeah they got better. But its such small differences that you have to ask yourself, is it really worth making a big fuss or even caring about them. Let alone dropping 500, 700, 1000+ dollars on them. Plenty of gear in this sport across the board are basically the same. Its all down to personal preferences, or put simply, what YOU like. Wether its a old angel, a new planet eclipse whatever, or a f***** rainmaker.

Not a real answer but damn i see it all the time at fields. Yeah your new _________ is nice. Now go over to the porta pottys and get rid of that damn hard on you have for it and let's actually get on the field and play

I completely agree. I have a B2K4, Ion, and a Dye Rize. The B2K4 is usually the electro I'm shooting, when I'm shooting an electro. The other two I loan out. The shot quality is just fine, and the efficiency is great.

If your marker has eyes. A revvy is all you really need. Light af, can be very small (vl90 or a 140rd tripod or a halo tsa with frontman shells), and they are simple and reliable.

The 90s ones i think are the toughest because well um... they still kicking around being used. Halo tsa shells aren't as brittle as eggys but close. Anything translucent i think is more brittle than the black or matte colored shells. Though my 90s blue translucent revvy still has no cracks but it sat in a box for well over a decade so...

Dye i5 Mask, they should have just took the i4 and added the cool twisty strappy strap dealio. I sold mine after about a month.

Its becoming impossible for me to use markers with a hopper on top. Feels like a big tumor in the way. If they were banned tomorrow I would toss rose petals.

Bright colored masks (any but especially white) reflect light into the visor/lens. I get it, looks cool, I’ve done it by the way, to look cool, but it’s about the dumbest thing in the world to me.

Don't burn me too hard guys, but at least for nelson/stock class I'm going to say Carters. I saved up for a whole summer when I was younger to snag a buzzard. I finally got it and while it was VERY pretty, I was definitely less than impressed. Stock class feed was wobbly and only had a single point of attachment at the front, and if you didn't line the body/slug up JUST right to the rest of it you'd have that annoying auto-fire without even touching the trigger. As smooth as the pump stroke was, I hated the large openings on either side of the gun where the pump handle connected to the bolt. Just an absolute dirt/grit magnet for me. Worse 12 gram efficiency than my phantoms, too. I think I had it for a whopping few weeks before I sent it packing and never looked back. Once my only thoughts were "My phantoms are better at A, B, C, etc" it was a dead stick. Not to mention at the time I could have bought 2-3 NEW phantoms for the price I paid for 1 new buzzard. Ridiculous.

I’m probably going to get some hate for this, but I’m going to say PPS markers. They’re shiny and they look cool, plus they have the whole brass thing going for them, but if I see one at the field it’s probably either leaking or being worked on in the staging area.

All my PPS markers shot absolutely gorgeously. But they are hard to service and expensive.

I'll agree with PPS markers. Had one hurricane that worked for a grand total of one day and that was all I needed. On the other hand they do great work on Sheridan pumps as long as they leave them a pump. Hard to mess up a gun by just honing the barrel and drilling the valve.

My overrated piece of equipment is the 12v Revvy. This is going to get some hate but I have 4 of them and all 4 have been pretty massive disappointments. I can easily outshoot them with most fast autocockers, they have to have the ball stack "just so" so that the eye doesn't see between balls in the stack and keep the motor running non stop, and they are a massive pain to take apart to clean. I have 4 because I keep multiple in my gear bag so I can just hot swap them when I chop a ball (which is inevitable with a revvy). My underrated piece of gear is the Ricochet apache which does all the revvy things but actually feeds consistently.

I got them fast fingers! I wouldn't say I had "issues" with revolutions just that they aren't as bulletproof as everyone makes them out to be. Also not sure how some folks can do 12bps and have them keep up. Seems like they can't consistently feed over 9bps.
