And the defendant referee was only 16 when it happened.

In reading the article the ref is not being said to be at all at fault. Its the injured vs special Ops Paintball LTD.

I have a hard time believing that some dude who pulled off his own goggles and then shot himself in the eye should have a legitimate claim for damages against anyone else but that's just me I guess

Not sure how you prove this without some form of actual evidence. They can both say whatever but unless there is more to the story not sure anyone can say what happened.

Remove his mask and shoot himself in the face... should he be nominated for a paintball Darwin award?

Always scared when renter try to defog their mask while playing even after they have been told prior game and even while ref and regular player yelled not to do it
some field have bottle of soapy water in the dead zone (not perfect but better than nothing)

Assuming Irish law is not completely weird relative to Anglo-American law, I would not expect the plaintiff to fare very well unless he has credible third party witnesses backing up his claim that he was instructed to remove his goggles.

It is unfortunate that he lost his eye but, I am very glad for the outcome of this case!

Carp Right? It's terrible that it happened, but personal responsibility matters. Happy that people are being held accountable for their actions.

This is why they place warning labels on everything.

"Judge O'Regan also found that there was no reason why costs should not be awarded against him"

So not only did he lose but now the company he was suing could counter sue for their added cost. Their insurance premiums were bumped from $8k to $40k while case was open in addition to their legal fees. Hefty chunk. I'm surprised they stayed afloat through the whole thing tbh. Might not be the best from a PR perspective (suing the guy who got hurt) but I would be surprised if they didn't (and he deserves to be sued back imo).
