Is Junk Quality Paint Jeopardizing Certain Play Styles?

Does trash paint make stock class/limited play near impossible? Maybe "impossible" is too strong of a word, and maybe not everyone is experiencing sad paintballz, but it seems like a majority of players who care about using good paint are having a hard time finding it. This sport/hobby/game is called "PAINTBALL" after all, so you would think the one thing we rely on most would have better quality control. Like it used to...

So that made me think...for these limited paint formats, does cruddy paint make it even more of a handicap? To the point where it's basically pointless to even try?

I found myself thinking the same. I know pump play is suffering from it. I’m sure magfed is as well as any other limited paint format.

Yes. I've found myself buying new mech open bolt spoolies because I can't find paint consistent enough at some of the field I play at to shoot a cocker or sniper.

Yeah, same. My main is an M170R now. I did use a (now sold) Sniper last outing and just overbored with anti roll-out fangers, it shot alright. But the EMEK got all the love that day.

It definitely makes stock class and limited paint harder, but I do still prefer to play open class pump albeit with a different play style. Back in the day I would just buy a half case or Marbilzer, put my 40rd hopper on and be good to go. Now I still play pump but I buy a full case, run a rotor hopper and carry 6 pods. Basically I shoot a lot more than I used because accuracy is down but I still do pretty well.

I have found this to be interesting in that, the more I shoot in a game the more of a target I become and then I end up shooting even more. In the games where I try to take it slow, the electro guys go after the other electro guys and I can play a slower game but then it still usually takes an extra shot or two to hit someone.

So to sum up, yes, it makes it harder so the stock class markers tend to stay packed away, but the open class pumps see more use.
"but we all have electros and you guys only have pumps, this wont be fair"

        (chuckling quietly) "we know"

100% yes! Good paint is key to limited paint format. There are fields I love I won’t play because there paint is so bad.

I’m lucky one sells the best paint in the NE the other I like to play is BYOP so I buy it at MSG Paintball and shoot it at APE.

One thing to mention, though, is that in many areas paintball simply isn't as viable of a business. Owners in many places simply don't have the business to justify having that much overhead in having more than two grades of paint, if that. They gotta play it safer than fields in metro areas or in pb hotspots like FL, CA and the NE states.
I have to drive at least 2 hours to see a field with more than one type of paint. And one of those paints is almost always 1-Star. That's just how it is here.

MSG Paintball offers 4-5 different grades. Basically a full Valken line with some others mixed in. When HK and Dye came out we got some of that to try. Rage paintballs for a bit. Sherry try’s to find the best paint for her field and proshop. It’s stored properly and sells faster then it needs to be rotated. Valken seems to be the most consistent stuff lately we are only a few Hrs from port so it don’t have long to go from the shipping container. It’s definitely the best paint I have found in the NE. You still get bad batches like any other paint. But it’s pretty consistent small bore but consistent.

There used to be BYOB, FPO, or BYOB with a fee fields. I have 1 field about an hour away that is BYOB unless you’re renting their equipment. Most are obviously FPO. I’m sure the fields would lose quite a bit of revenue with the BYOB+fee option. Plus, it’d be hard to enforce.

All that said, would BYOB+fee even help? I haven’t seen anything good, no matter the price tag, since 2004-ish.

It seems higher end paint is brought in fresh for big games and tournaments, then it sits, selling at a much slower pace, getting stale and out of round. Plus, many markers can’t shoot the high-end brittle stuff.

For me it really keeps my kp3 shelved and that makes ma sad. Last time i went out, i chronod my kp3, 301, 106, 230, 306, 115, 298, 301, 112, ect. I couldnt get 2 consecutive balls down range. I burned a hopper trying and switched to my mag.

Everyone is completely inaccurate, so at least if we are all shooting the same garbage it's an even playing field.

I had decent luck with my KP3 at Slim's stock class event. Just had to keep dropping barrel bore size till I was almost in danger of barrel breaks, turned my reg operating pressure down a bit just in case. Chrono'd in the 255-270 range with an occasional outlier.

While true the accuracy by volume crowd has a distinct advantage because they just send more. Good paint is my #1 requirement when choosing a field to play.

Last time I was out I was playing limited paint with a sport shot and 13/3k. I was playing with horrible paint, but I was still dominating the field against all renters. I assume that wouldn't be the case if I were against owners/experienced players.

Haha, you do bring up a good point. I have also been able to dominate the field vs the less experienced using crappy paint.

I just want big bore, round paint, that breaks on other folks but not in a high pressure paintgun. Is that so much to ask?

I regularly don't even shoot an autococker if I can't get a good ball. I'll shoot a mag or emek.
Last time I went to a non byop field the ball du jour was sub 0.675, rolled right out.

Yeah, it's wild. Aside from the not great quality, stuff is shrinking even more than ever.

It wasn't too much to ask from 1999 to 2004-ish, and I'm sure others can chime in with paint glory days prior to '99. Plus, it could be had for $50-55 per case of 2000 shipped to your door if you bought 3 or more at a time or caught sales. Was it the change to more environmentally friendly materials that ruined everything?

Well, taking a quick look, I guess $50 in 1999 is equivalent to $80 in 2021, and $50 in 2004 is equivalent to $70 in 2021. Is the modern, high-end, brittle stuff round and consistently sized? If so, are we asking for $70-80 cases of round, consistently sized, mid-grade-hardness-shelled paint to shoot in our older and/or higher pressure markers?

I'm thinking so. Personally, I don't think I'd notice much of a difference in my leisure funds given the relatively small amount I shoot with my mech semis. I wonder if the accuracy improvement would negate the current accuracy-by-volume approach. I'd appreciate it for my Autococker. And I'm sure the pump players would definitely want it.

Didn't make it out last yr, playing the prior yr, paint was so bad, from 30 ft, 5 shots at the full side profile and none hit. Thought it would be funny to bounce on off the ground, it didn't break. Tough day with a pump.

I've all but stopped playing stock class because of it. At least I can get away with playing open class, but the paint isn't great these days. Even the most recent tournament grade paint I shot was still inconsistent. Lots of out-of-round balls.
