A hobby I got into a few years back was restoring old organs. Its fun because they are very logical to work on, and facebook/craigslist/etc have endless free organs.

That one below is pretty small- About 500 pipes, dates to 1908. Its electro-pneumatic, but very primitive- It runs on 12volts, but does not have any "electronics". Just wires and simple switches. No logic or relays. The pipes use small 5 watt solenoids that open a small valve, that opens a larger valve, that opens a larger valve that sends air to the pipe. Inside the console is also all electro-pneumatic, with all sorts of moving parts. They use pneumatics instead of large solenoids because at the time that the electrical supply was not reliable enough for higher watts.

With all the stops out, it really does shake the house and annoy the neighbors. I have another 20 or so organs around the house in various stages of restoration.

its not expensive like paintball- The organs are usually all free- haha.

The real issue is that you will not find any manuals, and parts are scarce since organs are all custom built- You need to have problem solving skills, and the ability to fabricate.
and the most frustrating parts is the organ building community is EXTREMELY exclusive. Nobody wants to help anyone else. Everyone holds onto skills and information like they would die if shared with someone else. I think because it is a dying art, those whos livelihood depend on it see the skills and knowledge as money.

But its a sharp contrast from paintball or cars- There is always someone to help with knowledge, or parts, or anything.

The church where I used to go as a kid have a 1912 Casavant organ. I love the sound of those instrument. Must be really fun to have one in your house

Thats pretty incredible it's just something I never really thought about.

It makes perfect sense, someone has to build, maintain and repair them and with the sheer size, I guess I could understand people giving them away.

It is pretty much new, still has the “made in Mexico” sticker inside the ear.

I’ve adopted a sink or swim mentality with lens changes lol. I just start yanking on it and hope for the best. Either the frame breaks and it was no good anyway, or the lens comes out easily.

Id rock it. If the foam is decent, I'd take the frame off your hands if nothing else. . I have a brown/ tan bottom Id put it on to start a build.

Just like mine that I bought when I first started! Still have and still use it, perfect for photography days. I had to swap out the strap though, got stretched out over the years.
