    Chameleon Minimag

    Hey,

I heard rumors that there was a Cerakote place in my area that does coatings for Space X. I stopped in and asked if he could do paintball stuff. The owner was super nice, he came in on his day off and gave me a tour and everything. He couldn't tell me if they did coatings for Space X (which tells me what I wanted to know). I asked if he could do Chameleon coatings and he said something like "You dream it, and I'll do it". So I dropped off a rather rusty minimag. Two weeks later this is what I got!

I can't get pictures to show how it looks so check out this video in HD, does a bit better. Don't bother with sound, neighbor was running his chainsaw.
    https://photos.app.goo.gl/dm4PoUGVnUxJzxfB8

I asked about tolerances and he said he uses the highest quality coatings that are super thin and most durable he said tolerances won't be a problem at all, so far the Minimag works no problems and he even coated inside the screw holes which worried me but there was no issue what so ever! I am super happy and impressed with his work.

EDIT: This was done at Barefoot Customs in Winslow Maine. I contacted them and was told they do mail in work all the time. They welcome you to contact them for work. sales@barefootcustomcoatings.com.

    I highly recommend the company.

Right! I am really impressed by this quality of Cerakote. I have see some killer dust finishes but nothing quite like this. Is this also over Anno?

It was only $100. He said he would give me a deal because I was a repeat customer (he removed nickel coating from an AGD mag and Benchmark cocker trigger frames and coated them matte black). I am not sure, but I think that is the single color price, and he said this was technically two colors. So I have no idea what it normally would run.

When I picked it up he had a hand gun with tropical graphics on it with palm trees and it looked amazing. I said "I didn't know you could do something like that", he said name it and he will do it. Now I want to come up wit the craziest most insane thing I can think of and see what he can do!

Wow that is a steal! I have three projects right now that would look awesome in a crazy Cerakote. I'll have to look into it locally. Thanks for the post! It's always nice to see some incredible work.

    Yeah I'm curious as well.

Ave it's this a steel only thing or can it be done to aluminum as well?

He said he could do anything. Which I thought was crazy. I told him I looked it up and they said it is not good in paintball guns that are plastic because plastic flexes when it gets hit so it will crack the coating and start to peal and flake away. He said that is not true and told me to bring down a hopper, he would coat it and I could shoot it a bunch and prove it would not flake off. I forgot to bring one down, but he is literally 2 minutes from my house so I might just drop one off.

Cerakote pretty much can be put on any surface including all metals, wood, plastic...etc. The application process just changes depending on the heat tolerance the part can take. I have been a big fan to the point I am planning on doing my own setup to Cerakote now that my new shop is nearing completion. For anyone who calls it "paint" and not a durable as anodizing that is not true [if applied and cured properly] I have several handguns that use Cerakote with literally 1000s of rounds through them with little or no wear on the reciprocating ways other then the finish "polishing".

        Very cool.
I looked into Cerakote for a while; it's awesome stuff. Comparable to anodizing for thickness (for some types - others are a bit thicker) and the substrate just needs to survive the degreaser and bake (for baked finishes). And it's a spray on coating, so masking works!
I think we need a contest for the coolest Cerakote design! That mag looks great, like any modern factory finish.

That is freaking awesome. Does he take on work shipped to him?

Also can you asked what it would cost to do a complete marker, single or multi. Body, rail, asa, foregrip, frame, drop, valve and on/off.

I doubt it would hurt, but I doubt it will help, lol. I am pretty sure this was the first paintball thing he has done, I messaged him last night and asked if he would be okay with me sharing his company info with the paintball community and he said of course. So if he gets another person asking to do some paintball stuff, I am sure he will figure it was due to the Minimag he coated.

I don't know if it matters, but the owner coated the grip frames the first time, but he was too busy for the mag so he had one of his workers do the mag, and they are both fantastic quality. His business is in a super small town I live in, but I would estimate he has like 5 people working in the shop and he is trying to hire on more workers.

I asked him, and he said he is. He prefaced it with saying he is really busy, but he said in a good way. So there is a wait, but I had to wait 2 weeks for mine, and he kind of acted like that was a really long wait. I didn't want to tell him the anodizer that quoted me for my cocker said it would take roughly 4-5- months!

I should have mentioned that this "color shift" coating is called FX series. He said he has ever color combination that Cerakote offers. I asked for the color that best matched the old Model 98 Chameleons and he told me he thought it was Gun Candy Stingray. So that is what this Minimag was coated in.
