Solution to Inconsistent Paint = Overbore?

I'd like to avoid creating thread # 458943534 on underbore vs overbore.

Finally got out to play over the weekend, and this particular field offers unlimited paint at $25 per player which I haven't come across before. With entry and air, my own gear, paid just over $40 for the day. Not bad at all!

This unlimited paint is field paint of course, and field paint is typically mehhh as we all know. Inconsistent sizing, dimples, etc. When attempting to size it, I was able to fit a few through a .685 back with force (blowing or pushing through with squeegee) but got a few roll throughs, so I opted for .680 back. Worked fine, no breaks or noticeable rollouts.

Having a barrel kit is cool and all but I got thinking: do I really need a kit when playing pump + meh paint? I could just have a "middle of the road" sized back plus anti roll-out fingers and not worry about anything, right? If I remember correctly, overboring leads to better consistency, but not so much efficiency which is fine with a 68ci and a pump.

2) how many games did you play? Curious how the unlimited paint thing works out, only thing I can think of is limiting the number of games you play. I imagine most people stop playing before they use enough paint for the field to start losing money.
3) if you're using the anti roll-out fingers, yeah an overbore is definitely the way to go. With inconsistent paint (what are they using?), an overbore will be more consistent. If you had good paint, an underbore will be at least equal or more consistent, but with bad paint obviously that won't work as well.

3) Cool, and I just need to test it out. Got them fingers in my tool box but never used. With how little I play, thinking I could sell off the barrel kit and just one decent one + fangers and not worry about anything else.

It's called SB Paintball in American Fork, Utah. They mostly do rental parties, I'm guessing the unlimited paint thing works because people lose the will to play before people shoot more than a bag. That's my guess, at least.

maybe they are trying to enlist the conscience of the player to get you to care about their bottom line? like man, i don't want this field to go out of business, better not shoot too much...

if i've retained information properly, i think 20+ years of paintball ballistics testing showed that underboring is good for efficiency, and overboring is good for consistency, both to a degree of course. i think it was also determined that bore matching was the worst of both worlds.

Yeah man, for rec play when you don’t know how good the paint will be when you show up, I think detents, big bore and big tank are the winning combo.

You're playing pump, you're not shooting much so you have time to hand sort your balls between games. Go through your balls and remove all the dimpled ones and any ones that don't look round. Then get a ball sizer and sort them into piles of different sizes. Only use from a specific pile for a specific game.

I've gone to a moderate to large overbore on open bolt guns. Just works better with the crappy paint now. On closed bolt I try to get just on the edge of a paint match but on the large side. Rollouts will happen which isn't a huge deal on a semi auto but on a pump I run detents.

It is work, but when I'm at a field-paint only field playing pump, it's worth it to me

Well once you view it as work it is

Like messing around in the target range before a match. just becomes part of the afternoon of play.
