What do you wear for winterball?

While ventilated paintball pants and mesh jerseys are fantastic during the height of balling season (and Hawaiian shirts and cargo shorts have their merits as well), they're obviously not ideal when there's snow on the ground.

Anyone from a land where it snows knows that down, wool, and gore-tex are all go-tos when it gets wet and cold, but covering them in grease at the field then chucking them in the washer when you get home is exactly what you don't want to do to those fussy materials. There's also the issue of the intense workout in the field vs sitting about in the staging area to consider. If you haven't gone hard enough to work up a sweat even in cold weather you're probably not having fun, but that sweat can get you shivering as you stand still waiting for the next round to start. Throwing on another layer works, but now your outfit is a paint residue sandwich.

What are your go-to outfits for those sub-freezing days? Anyone found a way to be comfortable both on and off the field? Is it even worth trying to play when everyone is wearing a de-facto bounce suit to keep warm and no balls ever break?

Its all about light layers. I typically wear my pb pants ( given you wear them baggy enough) with sweat pants under them.

Back in my bushball days I played more winter ball then now. Back then, I had a camo one piece insulated jump suit it was great for the fact it was light weight, and kept me warm with minimal weight added. It was also nice to step into it st the field. And climb out of it fully clothed at the car.

It was lame because when you take a knee you would tension the line of fabric from your knee to your neck making it awkward. But I used that with a camo hat, and OD spectras for some time. I could hide in pine trees and people would walk right by me.

Now a days, Id say paintball pants with sweats and wool socks.

Thermal shirt under a tee under a hoodie under a jersey, a hat. And gloves.

Multiple long sleeves or a thermal layer under a Renagade denim jersey. I don’t usually wear gloves set my marker on my defrosters on the dash with the heat blasting so that it’s warm to start and I don’t set it down for the day. Pants I use a pair of denim fire hose pants with a thermal layer under. But that’s only if it’s really cold. As long as game turn over is quick enough I can keep my body heat up enough for the day and don’t get cold. I just try and keep moving and I’m usually good as long as it’s not bitter cold. Then I just stay home.

It never occurred to me to try pre-heating my gun before getting on the field. I'm sure that someone has figured out a way to rig up heated grips on a gun at some point.

I guess you could. Aluminum grips zap the warmth out of your hands when cold. Pre heating them stop this and allow you time to get playing. I rarely get cold when actively playing. I just don’t put it down for the day.

On the bottom…slider shorts and baggy denim (or any other heavy material) BDU like pants.

On the top, I have a undershirt (tucked into the sliders to keep my crack warm when I crouch), a T-shirt (or long sleeve in the real cold) and my Evil Gerbil jersey (again, heavy and baggy). If it’s REALLY cold, I have a Jersey with chest pads — they insulate really well and hold a lot more heat in. (My EG jersey was probably the best purchase I made for cold weather paintball)

I find that keeping it baggy will keep you warm and cool all at the same time.

never wore a neck guard it Schemag (sp?) - but I suppose it’ll help.

if I need to strip a layer, it’s always a bottom layer. Keeps the funk in the right places.

A shemagh is awesome around the neck in the cold.

I usually toss on a long sleeve and something to keep my ears from freezing off. On the rare occasion gloves.

Mind you my normal gear is under armour base layer, t shirt, and either a renegade jersey with team sleeveless jersey or a tactical shirt and the sleeveless jersey for hotter weather

Bottom- old army BDUs with thermals underneath. I’ve worn both thermals & pj pants under them when it’s really cold. Footwear depends on if there’s snow or not.

Top- a-shirt, t-thirt, long sleeve, flannel, hoodie, jersey. Less if I’m playing indoor but it’s not super warm. Shemagh around my neck, beanie on my head. Cotton liners under my fingerless gloves.

I wear a long sleeve t-shirt, looser henley and a hoodie on top, thermals with knee-pads under DBD pants on bottom. I have played in ~15°F weather comfortably with this setup.

Under armour cold gear long sleeve, hoodie, jersey on top, thermal leggings and paintball pants. Wool socks are a MUST.

            And gloves, of course.

Occasionally, I’ll wear a neck gaiter to cover my face in between games if it’s really really cold (below freezing and wind)

Wool socks definitely I’m golden as long as my feet don’t get cold! Darn tough ftw!

Maybe an extra shirt on under my jersey, boot socks, gloves. I'll either wear snow pants or other water resistant pants over my normal pants, but nothing too hot, depending on conditions.
            A fuzzy hat.

I actually tend to worry about sweating more than being cold. Cold is ok, freezing is bad. Keep a change of clothes in the car.

When dressing for being active outdoors in the winter you want to be cool (not cold) when you are first outside and inactive.

Hardshell kneepads are good if you're wearing pants that will absorb water easily. If you wear heavy nylon pants you can get away without kneepads if you don't often take a knee.

I think the materials you choose is the most important decision you make. I go for multiple layers of merino wool as base layers for cold weather play then regular paintball clothes on top of that. I'll wear a light weight merino t-shirt, light weight long sleeve merino t-shirt then a paintball jersey. If it is really cold I have a mid weight long sleeve that I will either add on or replace the light weight long sleeve with. I wear the same pair of merino underwear whether it is hot or cold out. I do have a 3/4 length pair of merino underwear but it has to be really cold for me to wear those playing paintball. I find them more suited for less active cold weather activities.

Like packersrule729 said go for wool socks. I converted to wearing wool socks everyday about 5 years ago and I can't imagine going back to wearing cotton socks. If I know it is going to be a wet day I bring a second pair of socks to change into for the ride home.

My base layer is the hooded anthrax MCB jersey from a few years back. I swear that thing is a one season jersey but it works great for that purpose. I’ll layer another jersey if it’s extra cold, either way a Hawaiian goes on the top. Legs are marmot lined, then an old pair of Valken pants. My socks are darn tough. BLachance75 pointed them out to me and they’re by far the best socks I’ve ever owned, any season, all year. Oh and if it’s an outlaw game it helps to put on a nip or two of the inside sweater as well
