What is a "sleeper" to you

I keep seeing people say they are going to build a "sleeper" and then it's something like a ID predator just in black.

Or, a RT mag that looks, like pretty much every other RT mag ever

So, what constitutes a "sleeper" to you?

To me a sleeper is a marker that if I look at quickly I would think it is worth under $300 or so. Then it shoots like a $1,000 marker.

I have a "sleeper" mag build right now. It is a SS body with Lukes vert feed, it is a dull sandblasted gray all over. However, the grip frame has been gutted and I plan on installing pneumatics in it. So at after glance it should look like a standard junk mag, but hopefully will outshoot a revy.

I think the goal is to have others think you are playing with a cheap hunk of junk before the game and run in fear during the game.

Here is mine. Other than the frame, it looks like an old clapped out cocker. If you looked inside you would see all ID pneumatics, the back block is hollowed on the inside so it is crazy light and the trigger is modded as a pneumatic assist with the trigger's airline machined into the body. The barrel is also a Lapco with just the unported part showing so it looks like a short stock barrel. It does have a bolt pin, the ziptie is temporary because reasons.

      Shoots fast and sounds scary.

Bonus points for telling people it's "just an old Trilly frame".

A sleeper is something that looks stock on the outside but is upgraded internally, so it looks normal but performs much better.

So take a stock Emek, throw an upgraded valve and bolt in it but leave it all stock otherwise. No hint or sign of upgrades until you start slinging paint.

RAZRBAKK May I ask what input pressure, on/off pin length, and trigger rod length you're running? Any other modifications? I see the macroline on the side, so I was especially curious about the input pressure that can handle. Oh, and do you know what the resultant bps is? Thanks.

nak81783 unfortunately this is not my video, but the member is from here.

In the description he states 1100 PSI input, shortened pin, LVL10, and 25bps.

To me this really isn't though. The capabilities of an upgraded emek are not leaps and bounds different than a stock emek .

Now, you put that emek in a tiger shark body and then we are well within "sleeper" territory in my book

Meh, the problem with automags in my book is 2 fold

        1) new players don't know what they are
        2) experienced players see the RT on the side and know what it is

So you are not really surprising anyone

And at this point, if I see any automag on the field chances are it's something decent. Not a lot of people rubbing around with basic automags anymore

New players don't know what an automag is, sure, but it still looks like a janky old piece of shit.

Most experienced players these days don't know what an automag is either, so what do they see? A janky old piece of shit.

You asked what I thought was a sleeper, I posted it.

Looks stock or cheap but shoots much better than stock or cheap.

I've said the same thing before, peoples "sleepers" are pretty obvious. You haven't done an Rv26 swap into a clapped out civic. You've added some wrap to a McLaren F1 and expect people to not recognize it.

The only real sleepers I can think of were those old Heavily modified Tippmann effect markers. I remember hearing stories of them modding Timmies to fit inside the 98 shells. That's a real sleeper.

That's kind of where I'm at, put that RT mag in a tippmann triumph shell and we have a legit sleeper,

My homebrew Ebolt 98 was a "sleeper" - most people just saw a M98, and at best commented on the LP kit.

And then there was my EP Mag. Again, most people thought it was in Intelliframe'd Mag, very few caught the LPR. I even posted it on AO and everybody there thought it was a stock Mag with a vertical feed Emag body.

And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

I have some nicely tuned spyders that are sleepers. They shoot faster and better than they look.

But really just something that looks stock and basic but isn't.

Thing is, a "sleeper" really doesn't mean much in this sport. You either have the noobs to whom anything but a rental is a "machine gun", or the experienced players that know it's the nut behind the wheel that matters the most. Sleepers only 'work' with a narrow group of players that have some, but not all that much, experience- typically agglets who think that a $1,000 gun is twice as good, twice as fast and twice as accurate as a $500 gun.

Personally, it's more clothes and attitude for me.

Kid shows up with matching jersey, pants, goggles and loader, shooting the latest $1,800 marker, and strutting around like there's a scout for Dynasty in the crowd? He'll only be a challenge because he's fast, aggressive and will be throwing all the paint he can carry.

Kid #2 shows up with a fancy gun, but he clearly doesn't know much about it, and is just wearing street clothes? No real challenge, he's a noob with a few games under his belt, trying to "buy skill".

Kid #3 shows up with virtually any gun, a nice basic kit, and acts like he knows the field but isn't bragging about it? That one will be the challenge.

Kid #4 shows up with something custom built, and freely talks about the mods and what he did to it? That guy will be a challenge, too.

Personally, while I'm not as young or fast as I once was, I have never felt undergunned even with a box-stock Spyder, a parts-box 'Cocker, a base model 'Mag, or something weird like a Blade, Equalizer or TM-11-A pump.

The only time I feel outgunned, is when the other guy is spending paint like it's a half-penny a ball. Doesn't matter if it's coming out of an Ion, Intimidator, CS3 or a 68 Special. If he's got enough air and paint, and the gun's reliable enough to not chop, that's more worriesome than whether his 'Mag can do two BPS more than a stock one.

It depends on who you're trying to fool. But they will at least need some baseline knowledge of how the sleeper base typically performs. So yeah if you try to fool new players with an rt valve in a classic body they will just think that's how all 'mags perform because they've probably never even heard of one before. An ebolt'd (or even an rt'd or e grip'd) 98 would fool the majority of people who show up to the local field. They would just assume the extra parts are just the typical Tippmann 'upgrades' if they do happen to notice them. The more knowledgeable the people you have to fool the more subtle the distinguishing details have to be.

Exactly. I primarily play with Mags and the majority of players that walk up ask what year Shocker, Axe, or Geo that is.
