I watched some of that 7-man Toulouse video from 2001. Lotsa classic stuff on there in lovely VHS quality.

Not on 99, but we used to go out and watch them, trained next to them and played with a few of them.
They all had custom shockers with the occitan cross machined on the frame somewhere ...

This "Arenaball 1994" footage is especially interesting, if only for the conspicuous lack of autocockers- everyone's using automags and VMs.

There's also some "barrel cam" footage edited into the gameplay but I'm not convinced it's legitimate- there's never any other players visible on the field when the "barrel cam" footage is going on and I can't spot the camera rigs on any of the players' guns, which must have been huge and bulky. I suspect it was filmed outside of actual play and edited in for effect. I can't imagine any of the players consenting to put the necessary equipment on their gun during the tournament.

I seem to recall some old footage, pre-YouTube, possibly old WARPIG, of an... exhibition game? Possibly a one-on-one, between Dave Youngblood and another player? This was far enough back Dave was still using one of his custom silver Carter pumps.

They both had what was considered a cutting-edge, broadcast-resolution miniaturized camera strapped to the muzzles, so they could get a POV shot. But that was just the camera- it had a thick cable running to a fanny pack that contained the recorder- possibly/probably tape based, like a Hi-8 or something like that.

Haven't thought about that clip in years, I wonder if it's still up somewhere?

(Then again, Bill Mills also hit the field a few times with a Viper M1, with an underslung camcorder- that was roughly half again bigger than the gun. )

I recall such footage and the huge camera gear strapped to them/their gear. And the "POV" video was always super grainy and crappy looking 🤣

It always annoyed me that the video could only rarely catch a ball in flight. And then later, with the better, clearer digitals... we still can't easily catch a ball in flight.

Very satisfying when it works, though.

    Working...
