    Eye Dominance and Marker Preference

I am not exactly sure what the best way to put my thoughts into words so i guess i will just put it into a question format and go from there.

    1. What is your dominant hand?
    2. What is your dominant eye ?
    3. What is your preferred setup (RF,LF,CF, Flat topped and ect ect...)?
    4. What is your most hated setup(RF,LF,CF, Flat topped and ect ect...)?
    5. What setup did you think you were going to love but just couldn't get used to?

Photos of your favorite marker and least favorite marker or any insights into the why would be amazing!

    1. Right
    2. Left
    3. CF has been my "good enough" go to for years and i guess i am just comfortable with it. I aim down the right side of my barrel with my head over the marker.. Recently i have been shooting a LF Houndstooth with a stock class feed and it has made me question everything.
    4. RF(open class only.. i don't seem to mind the KP2 Style offset stockclass setup).
    5. RF with Hoppers and"Flat topped" builds.. I thought this would be my be-all and end-all but i can't hit the side of a barn with one..

a side note... all the markers i have that are not center feed have sights. Including the HT. My previous two left feeds i was not a fan of... and maybe that is why!

      Dominant hand: Left
      Dominant eye: Right
Preferred setup: Centerfeed/right side horizontal feed
Most hated: RF/LF with a hopper. I just can't seem to point it right.

Do you prefer shooting left handed?

How do you aim your markers?

Loophole I like to aim speedball style, tilt the gun inwards, look down the barrel from the outside with my dominant eye. It definitely exposes me more on my dominant side, but that just forces me to use my non-dominant hand more.

Phantom VSC + over the pump handle I had a hard time with. Like many others, probably due to what I got used to from the start, which was a CF mechanical semi auto. Pump handle blocking the line of sight down th side. Over the top aiming never really worked either. But trying out a Phantom again, with UC kit this time so we'll see. But that aside, just CF for me. I don't like RF, never tried LF but probably will have the same issue when switching to left hand. I'm right handed and left eye dominant, but for paintball that doesn't matter since both eyes always open. Haven't tried a true flat top marker, such as a magfed something.

        1. What is your dominant hand? Right handed but ambidexrtous. I shoot with left handed though.
        2. What is your dominant eye ? Right
        3. What is your preferred setup ? CF - really all I've ever used.
        4. What is your most hated setup(RF,LF,CF, Flat topped and ect ect...)? Nothing really. Haven't had a lot of variety.
        5. What setup did you think you were going to love but just couldn't get used to? Phantoms...

Too light, felt like a feather duster. It was about 20 years ago now so should probably should try again some time.

Right-handed, left-eyed, which I understand is pretty common. Back when I shot handguns semi-competitvely, it sure didn't help, but it's interesting that an OEG (occluded eye gunsight) worked very well. Basically a daytime-visible laser dot.

I prefer center feed or right-feed. Absolute nos are left-feed or powerfeed-left. Anything that puts the loader in my line of sight. The one exception there is my Vee-Twin- you sight right down the center on that one.

One thing I've found that helps is long barrels- I prefer 14", simply because it gives me more visual reference for both eyes. It "points" better- faster and easier.

What was the deal-breaker part of phantoms for you?
-In my case, while I love my Phantoms, they're too "short". For me- being a somewhat big guy- I prefer the taller stacked-tube format, Snipers and CCM, etc.

Tried 'em, but they don't work in paintball anywhere near as well with real steel.

With pistols, I could never afford the "race gun" class stuff with compensators and 30mm red-dots and the like- hell, I could barely afford the ammo, and later, as this biz started going, I couldn't even afford that.

With paintball, well, I've been playing long enough, and with so many different markers, I have little trouble putting the ball more or less right where I need it to go- assuming decent paint and a clean barrel, of course.

How can I tell which eye is dominant? Dominant Hand seems obvious.

        edit: Loophole's explanation makes sense.

        1. What is your dominant hand?

Right, although that can change depending on the sport played. I'm semi-functionally ambidextrous.

        2. What is your dominant eye ?

        Left, apparently. 🙂

        3. What is your preferred setup (RF,LF,CF, Flat topped and ect ect...)?

Aesthetically speaking, RF, although I've grown accustomed to CF now and would have to argue I prefer it at this point.

        4. What is your most hated setup(RF,LF,CF, Flat topped and ect ect...)?

Center SC. I like side tube much better.

        5. What setup did you think you were going to love but just couldn't get used to?

Phantom. 🙂 I'm hugely in favor of stacked tube guns, and much prefer the pump stroke on my Sheridans.

And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

Stare at something 25 feet away or so. Switch off closing each eye. When your dominant eye is closed the object will "jump". Your dominant eye open and non-dominant closed will be the same as having both your eyes open!

The way I was taught is to look at an object across the room and holding your arms out in front of you make a circle with your hands around the object. Now bring your hands to your face while keeping the object "circled" with your hands. Your hands will naturally go to your dominant eye.

Loophole's method gives me the same results. So either should work. The circle an object method is fun because you can do it on other people. Gonna go try it on my kids now... lol!

I use a combination of these two methods. Hold your hands out arms length and make a triangle with your thumbs and index fingers. Pick an object in the distance and center it in the triangle with both eyes open. Close one eye and recenter the object in the triangle as necessary. Open both eyes again, recenter the object, close the other eye and recenter. Whichever eye you had to move the triangle less for is your dominant eye.

        1 right
        2 right
        3 centerfeed
4 anything offset, mostly for weight reasons
5 nothing related to this thread

I started with centerfeed, and I've owned a several right or powerfeed guns over the years. Never had a lefty. I love the look of right feed guns, but like I said the weight bothers me. Something like a 98, where the offset is minimal, doesn't bother me as much. And I don't remember powerfeed bothering me but it's been a long time since I've tried one. I don't like trying to aim with one though

          2. What is your dominant eye ? Right (actually blind out of the other one)
          3. What is your preferred setup (RF,LF,CF, Flat topped and ect ect...)? SC/flat topped
          4. What is your most hated setup(RF,LF,CF, Flat topped and ect ect...)? Right feed
          5. What setup did you think you were going to love but just couldn't get used to? Right Feed. Notable mention for Back Bottle Air.

            1. Right handed
            2. Right eye
            3. Flat top preferred with warp left or fed from bottom, CF is tolerable
            4. While "hate" is a bit strong, I don't love how powerfeeds ruin the line of sight over the top and one side of the marker.
            5. Nothing I can think of.

I've never really liked having the hopper on top of the gun. I think mostly because I grew up as a country kid and did a lot of rifle shooting long before getting into paintball. So it's always felt like a compromise having the hopper sticking up.

Gotta say this is my favorite setup right now..

I'm right handed, left eyed also.

I'll shoot most any setup, but hate when hopper left setups block my left eye.

I like occluded sights. I also liked using red dots as occluded sights at night in big games. I haven't played a night game in a while though.

I had trouble with the old uni body Phantoms also, but I think it was grip angle and pump location. I have a stock class phantom now with a 45 frame, custom grips and under cocking kit that works for me.

I thought I'd love the right feed as a lefty (less exposure/smaller profile when shooting), but I have vision issues it really only caused me eye strain

All that being said, I recently purchased a Southpaw body kit from Mozak and I CAN'T WAIT to get it built!!!

I pretty much only play stick feed, or single shot, so flat top? I do really like my Lefty Stock Class phantom though.

RF….there are so many cool ”older” markers I’d love to shoot. But I HATE RH feed, just can’t get used to us….I’ve probably bought 10 different RH markers over the past 2 years knowing I hate RH feed, but telling myself “this time it’ll be different, I’m make myself get used to it”. And 2 weeks later, it’s on the chopping block.

                      2. Dominant Right eye (but I use outside eye to aim)
                      3. Center Feed
                      4. Anything not Center Feed
                      5. Anything you have to aim over the top right/left feeds I can’t train myself to look over the top to aim. Anything back Bottle I need to get behind the Barrel line to aim.

My favorite marker to shoot is my Custom VSC Phantom. I have so much trigger time behind it, it’s been modified just how I want it. It’s dead accurate and perfectly balanced and lightweight. I have had many memorable insane shots with it. I’m a big Stock Class Nerd and it performs flawlessly every time. It’s definitely my go to marker when I want to put the work in. I love hunting walk on Electros in the woods with it especially with good paint on a warm dry 60* day. 👌🏼
