    Short n' Freaky!

I've been running various parts through the CNC lathe the past few weeks, one small batch of which is some LED Angel Classic-style Freak backs. It often takes me a couple tries to nail down the specs on a new program, and this run was no different. I had a couple 'blank' backs that I'd basically scrapped, and was test-cutting on those.

I could get two tries out of a blank by bandsawing off the previous attempt (I had some chatter issues that made a couple of them pretty ugly) and cutting it again. The last such try made a perfect LED Angel thread... about half the usual length.

It could actually be used. You'd have to cut some inserts down to 3.125", but other than that, it should work fine.

Anybody want it? Make ya a deal on it. Or maybe trade for something similarly absurd.

    Doc,

I don’t own an Angel so I can use the above barrel, but it reminded me that you had mentioned awhile back that you might be working on a few F1/Raptor freak backs. Did those ever get made or are they still somewhere on the list?

Actually yes, I made a couple 'prototypes' not long ago, to double check they swap properly. And I still have a basketful of 'blanks' I'll be feeding through the machine this weekend- intending specifically to try and cover a number of the more obscure threads.

I’ll try and keep tabs on your posts, but if you finish up a Raptor back, please let me know.

I do enjoy playing with shorties. If you still have one available please shoot me a PM with your asking price.

I only have the one, and to repeat, in order to use it, you have to cut down a Freak insert to fit.

If that works for you, just hit me with an email and we can go from there.

There is "Freak" and "Freak XL". You could call this "Freak XS", add a bunch of marketing bs full of bogus claims and pseudoscience, and sell tons of them to idiots who will believe anything.

That said, if no one else want it, I'd be interested.
      I can haz feedback?
If I owe you feedback, just remind me, as I sometimes forget.

What exactly does your CNC lathe do? I'm familiar with CNC milling machines as well as the enclosed CNC machining centers that will mill, reposition, mill, change tooling, mill, etc. and turn out an almost finished piece.

Does a CNC lathe do more than simply machine the outside profile or can it change cutters, drill axial holes, and finish the barrel by boring it out to finished tolerances?

-I have a fairly simple "gang tooled" CNC lathe. Meaning it has a largeish slide that has multiple tools bolted to it. Rather than changing tools like a CNC mill, this one simply moves from one tool to the next:

-Mine can't, but there are certainly some that can. There's one for sale up near me with "live" tooling- that is, it can indeed drill and mill, as well as turn- that I'd love to have, for a bunch of reasons, but the asking price is in the "pretty nice used car" range, and my budget barely reaches "most of an old Schwinn" on a good day.

I've never seen one of those, but I'm no machinist. Just a guy who tinkers around w/ his Harbor Fright cheap piece of junk milling machine. I've used a Clausing Lathe, Jet Lathes, Bridgeport and Jet Milling machines and a water jet machine at a local university that has an open shop. Thinking of getting a Precision Mathews benchtop milling machine that will be a nice upgrade from the HF.
