I'm sure it's really nice but six hundy?! That's a lot to spend on a chrony for paintball.

If any marker or paint manufacturers wanted to do some real product testing, this would be perfect for it. It records whole sessions and calculates things like standard deviation. A paint company could legitimately show how consistent their paint is compared to other brands.

Of course now that I write that, I realize that no company will ever do that. Paintball companies need customers to be ignorant.

Yeah, that's not gonna be their marketing campaign.

It would be akin to a hotdog company leaning into to the tag line " we use the finest lips and buttholes".

Unless I'm missing something the Virtue Clock does that as well.

Virtue sure says it does at least. Not like I own one

Good thing the payments are interest free. That alone makes it more affordable.🤣

This is already making some big shockwaves in the firearms industry, which is the main application. Chronographs for firearms are usually bulky and annoying. The fact that you can put this under a rifle with no crazy large battery packs, screens, etc. and get accurate readings is great. Being able to read paintballs is cool too.

Yeah I realized that as well. For what it is, is pretty cool though just overkill for most paintball situations

Wonder if we could design a cheap one? There's enough brain power around here... Maybe?

The problem you typically run into with stuff like this is the time it takes to design and build it. Not to mention that the components are never as cheap as initial expectations.

Say you wanted to build a paintball chronograph. You could grab a doppler sensor like this: https://www.seeedstudio.com/Grove-Do...11-p-4572.html

Hook that up to your favorite microcontroller, add a display, design and 3d print some sort of enclosure. You're probably looking at $80 to $150 just for the parts.

Then you'll still need to spend 50 or more hours coding, testing, debugging, and calibrating it.

At the end of the day you're better off dropping a couple hundred on a chrony that's ready to go.

                  All good points.

What about a break beam sensor then? Just guessing that those would be cheaper

That would save some bucks for sure. But you're still looking at a big chunk of time to design & build the whole thing. If the project is a labor of love or as a learning activity then it's all good, but if the only reason is because it's cheaper... you're probably better off working some overtime or picking up some side work and just buying it.

Another thing people don't realize is how much cheaper all the parts are for the big boys making thousands of something. Us little guys who buy one or two of something are often paying 3-4X or more than what the large quantity buyers are. Take a look at this for example: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/...7808CTG/919336 if you are buying less than 10 the price is $0.72 but if you are buying 2500 price is a third of that.

Maybe I'll try it someday. If there's one thing the paintball community could use, it's a cheap Chrono. Probably would just be a learning project for me

Trbo323 You should, and we'd all be cheering you on. If it's a learning opportunity or a passion project then it's totally worth it.
