    Cheap Mask Questions

I'm looking for CHEAP masks. I need to pick up probably 3 for an upcoming outing with a couple buddies that I want to loan equipment to so they have at least a better experience than rentals.

I'm trying to decide between the Dye SE or the Carbon OPR. Not married to those choices, but they seem to be the cheapest on the market.

Based on my research it looks like the Dye SE might be a little bit bigger/more coverage?

Interested to hear from anyone with first hand experience with them. Have a different recommendation? Drop that here too!

    Thanks!

Just throwing it out there I have a black Crbn OPR for sale. They're definitely nice for the price, especially with how easy changing lens (and foam) is.

I don't see your sale thread, though probably just looking to grab a trio of new ones

Key feature you want is the dual pain lens. If it don’t have it you don’t want it. Might as well use the rental masks if not.

Carbon OPR has a dual pain

Dye SE comes with and without a dual pain. Make sure if you choose that make you get one with or buy the $24 upgraded lens. You want the Dye SE “Thermal” if you go with the Dye. (They are $49)

I think the Virtue VIO Ascend Is the best bang for your buck mask IMO @ $99 - $89

Empire Helix isn’t bad if you get the thermal lens ones. They are like $59

      Another option.

Empire helix thermal $42 on ans

Get the thermal version, they do make a single pane version as well. But it's the same lens as the e-vents and e-flex.

Foam is stiffer, it was basically intended as a rental mask but you can also change out the foam with an empire e-vents replacement kit. Does take some elbow grease though

If I'm forced to choose between your two options I'm probably going dye. Not any huge ground breaking reasons why though

Yes, DEFINITELY getting something with a thermal lens.

Chuck E Ducky The Virtue VIO looks great, but really not looking to put another $150 into this day I'm already footing a lot of the bill for. Though maybe I'll get that one for me, it looks pretty nice. What is the sizing like? I have a big head lol

Trbo323 Thanks for pointing out the Helix, that looks like another good choice. Again wondering about sizing.

        Thanks!

Masks are kind of a personal thing. Best bet is to go to a pro shop and try them on. Most of the less expensive masks have a ton of coverage. The more expensive masks have tighter profiles for performance reasons. But with that you get better lenses.

I have a box of masks that you can have if you pay for shipping. They are old and will need cleaning.

A little on the larger side. Typically works fine for adults but it's a little large for kids. I've seen people able to run glasses under them as well

The helix is a good all around fit for people. Back when I worked at the local proshop, it was pretty much the first mask I'd hand people to try on. I don't think I ever found someone who thought it was uncomfortable. Not the best certainly, but far from the worst.

My go-to recommendation for budget masks is the Valken MI-7. They are about $40-45 each.

I'll echo the Helix. Mine's an older one, but it still works great. Took my boy for his first time a few weeks ago & he picked that one out of the 4 total I have. Like Maggie said, not the best but far from the worst. I tend to recommend the Helix or JT Proshield for first/cheaper masks.

I need to watch for some Helixes to pop up. I have a bunch of dual pane lenses for them kicking around.
