    So this just happened.

    Got a new classic mag. Pulled the valve to check it out. Lots of rust on the spring and bolt. Figured that is going to need a complete rebuild. Not even going to try it.

    The rest looks ok. So I grab another of my valves. Air it up, no leaks and fires nicely. Fire it off about 5-7 times and the quick strip screw drops out. And I am like what the. Take the air off. Pick up the screw and damb it snapped.

    lucky that when it snapped the piece left in the valve, it was sticking out and at the snap the burr actually stuck up. Was able to grap pliers on the little burr and back it out.

        It happens more frequently than you would think. If it happens to anyone, do not attack it with easy-outs. often times it can be removed with a pencil eraser or friction.

          Would you glue the eraser to the tip of the broken piece in the valve. Or just using friction and pressure to back it out?

          The field I worked at 20 years ago had rental mags.... This was a weekly issue. Fun fun.

            Interesting to hear this happens often and I hope i don't come across it. What's the prognosis? Age, fatigue from years of shear force, quality issue?

              I've never owned an Automag, but it seems like a pretty clear design flaw. There's a shear force that that screw is resisting right at the end of the threaded section, right? It'd probably be a lot stronger if the shoulder of the screw went into the valve body to resist that shear.

              Seems like a bayonet pattern lock with a pin would be better positioned to take the force, with the screw just to prevent rotation...
