Stripping paint off JT masks (also -- MCB has no mask or JT section?)

I wanted to post this on MCB for purposes of sharing information in a properly indexed/searchable place (versus facebook)

I bought JT Proshields. They were rattlecanned black probably 15 years ago plus, with overspray on the soft frames as well.

I got the paint off by
    • Soak in soapy water, and while in the water disassemble them, flex the parts to disrupt/crack paint surface, and gently scrape loose paint as makes sense. Again do this IN the soapy water for lubrication. I used a credit card for scraping help
    • Applying Citristrip gel. Brush on, saran wrap it to maintain moisture, let it sit ~4hrs. Brush off the loose paint in water stream (nylon brush) It came off pretty easily
Citristrip had zero noticeable effect on either plastic type (hard parts, flex frame).
Citristrip WILL eat some hard plastics and I haven't tested it on proflex soft bottoms, only proshield

    Remember PPE for eyes/hands

    • Hot soapy water, the heat helps plastic to expand a little breaking the bond with the paint. Then use some vegetable oil to work in under the paint. Finish off with good old Dawn.
    • Citrus based paint strippers will work on MOST plastics, try it on a small spot, it may take patience.
    • Denatured Alcohol also works but does open up the pores of the plastic. This is good to use to finish up cleaning the plastic off and is a good prep before painting if planning on new paint.
