Time to get away from numbered bore sizes

"Welcome to paintball, the game where the bore sizes are made up and the paint doesn't matter" - Drew Carey

The bore size marked on inserts or barrel backs are pointless. Especially with aluminum Freak inserts which are atrocious. Even with solid barrels the actual size will not be 100%, so what's the point?

It would make more sense to just label them "small, medium, large" and be done with it.

But what about stopping rollouts?! IDGAF, I love playing with snipers and if the barrel can stop rollouts and FPS is consistent enough, great. If they rollout, grab some tape or anti rollout fingers.

If paintballs get a bit smaller and keep the oval shape they're starting to get, I'll finally have ammo for my macho fire.

Truthfully I usually just stick with a .684 and never change it. Due to the non round shape it's hard to judge the true size.

Same here. I've exclusively used a .684 for some time now.

I’ve been running a 684 lapco with 676 and 670 inserts as needed on my snipers for a dozen years now and it’s been perfect. Lapco knows how to size their shit. Smart parts didnt know or care how to manufacture to a spec. No, they knew, they didn’t care. lol.

You came to mind when I got my 684 and 690 Bigshots. I have different ways to stop rollouts, but I've always liked Lapco stuff excited to give it a whirl this weekend

I’ve been calling freaking inserts by their color like they’re Gatorade flavors for years.

Hmm that might be why no one asks me what bore I’m using. I just tell em red and let them sort out the details.

Funny story......smart parts did that back in the day. The color of the back denoted small medium and large bore

Anecdotally I'm a big fan of wedgits/fingers and a mid-bore (~.685), but lately the paint has been so small I've been underboring the crap out of everything just to hit velocity.

On an open bolt I'll usually run a .684 and call it a day.

I am with you Jonny a super big fan of slightly over bored with Wedgits and for a long time my PPS 0.685 barrel with Wedgits worked great for my Pyre. Lately though paint is so small that no longer works. I need to get a 0.680 barrel with Wedgits now. I have thought about putting Wedgits into Inserts so I can use one barrel go with the concept of Large/Medium/Small and just slightly overbore and have the Wedgits to hold stuff firm.

It's funny, when the Luxe Idol came out it came with 2 bores labled small and large and a I saw a lot of people complain about not having the exact size marked on them. Personally, I thought it was a good idea.

Oh yeah that's what I was trying to think of, the Luxe Idol. I remember people being upset over that haha

I run mostly 691 pwr inserts on everything. No breaks and they shoot straight. I laugh at everyone sizing for paint, it's just not worth the hassle. Now if I was shooting a phantom I would buy the detent rings and just use them. They were a simple and effective fix for rollouts to me. I have a couple of full insert kits but I really don't use them.

But I like the idea of small medium and large.

FWIW the detent rings are an imperfect solution and can be hard on paint, but I get your point. The ASP detent on the other hand makes just about any Phantom very usable.

Yeah that's what I ended up doing with my phantom. The ASP detents worked great

I've always considered the numbers on the inserts to be more guidelines than actual measurements. Best to not overthink it.

I guess I'm in the minority here because I use many different sizes. Sure paint is small, but I definitely use the sizes between.675-.682 frequently. Three different sizes wouldn't work great for me unless I was running dummy fingers eveytime out.

I’ve not seen paint consistent enough to fall within 004 variance in at least 15 years.

I'm glad this post came up, alot of good info, I didn't want to run fingers but it looks like that's the best solution I'm sure I'll end up loosing a bunch though 😂

            .677, .679, .682, .684
            Teal, Silver, Yellow and Orange
            in a pbDNA 4x case

ive been able to grab multiples in each of those for my loaners and never needed anything larger or tighter.

i always put a handful of balls through starting with biggest. if a few go thru the next size down but every once in a while its too tight, ill size up.
worth the occasional rollout to avoid any potential chops. Usually wont break paint in the barrel more than 2x per case this way.
now, my loners getting short stroked by the fools i let use em? different story. and if im short on the correct size, allll the loaners are getting .684

my snipers seem to shoot best with .679 overall,
            openclass phantoms with .682
and my stock class stuff with .677

i like the purple/gold striped graffiti best when its available. seems most consistently round, small bore and heavily filled. not super thin shell but i dont usually have issues with bounced shots. my priorities are avoiding breaking paint in the guns, rollouts, accuracy in that order
hard to miss if you can close the gap and only have to make a shot from 15ft away!
            🙂
