To be fair, this is a semi pro player going up against amateur airsoft players
But also yeah from what I've ever seen airsoft players are never holding lanes and dumping streams until 1 hits either, they go in with military tactics rather than game tactics that the equipment can allow

People want 15bps super aggressive “Traumhead Sports” style gameplay and it’s been hiding in airsoft the whole time
-That was may more than 15 BPS.

-A pro paintballer with a machine gun and an "unlimited ammo" cheat.
That said, I can recall thinking a few years back, when somebody would scale down one of our spoolers to shoot airsoft. Probably a third to a quarter the reciprocating weight, way lower op pressures...? This guy did it and made a wickedly fast action.
Most of the current HPA engines on the market can cycle up to 60 or so. Some electric guns with dual sector gears have fed at up to 80rps. The magazine is usually the limiting factor.

Doc.
When I first heard that airsofters were messing around with HPA builds and speedsoft was a thing I had the same basic thought. After all, a hopper feed lets gravity do 90 percent of the work for you and paintball markers in the 2000s already hit 40+ cycles per second - the fragility of our ammo was always the limiting factor. Taking paintball tech and adapting it to airsoft (where the projectiles are smaller, of more predictable dimensions and sturdier)...yeah, I figured the result would be wild.
Maybe someone needs to make an airsoft version of a Cyclone feed...

The mags they use are already plenty fast the real problem is you have to manually wind them. That has always confused me. For a sport that wants to be as close to military equipment as it can, having to manually wind the mags up mid game seems really odd to me.
I think it's a combination of in order to make a self winding mag you would need to really change the gun design to put some energy into the mag and then also require players to buy different mags since from what little I know there were only a few mag styles that pretty much worked interchangable. Think about paintball barrels, how there's only a few different threads being produced these days and how annoying it would be if PE up and said, new marker must use our new barrel thread!

I was thinking more a full-on A-5 hopper with a Cyclone converted/designed to run Airsoft 6mm BBs. Think of how many BBs would fit in a paintball hopper...and if some weird circumstance required you to reload, well then just pull a jar of BBs out, open the hopper and dump 'em in. Milsim airsofters would consider it heresy, but I think speedsofters would dig it. Plus I think the RoF you could get on such a gun would be crazy.

Only the hi cap (250+) mags require winding. Mid cap (100-150) and low cap (30-50) mags do not.

I see what you're saying, ditch the whole aesthetics and go for pure ammo capacity/speed. Basically heavy gunner roll but performance driven
The cyclone in specific, I'd be a little concerned about that finger that guides the paint/bbs into the breach. On a a5 it's roughly 1/3 the height of the paintball since the cyclone has 2 fingers to push the paint around. So for a 6mm bb that finger would be 2mm at best, that's the cross section of a dime for reference. That would make me nervous because I feel like it would be pretty easy to bend/break
Regardless, there probably is a way to do it, I feel like it would look even weirder on an airsoft gun though

That's the names thanks I was forgetting them. I've seen a few videos of people playing, typically shot first person, and every once in a while you hear them winding the mag. It always strikes me as an odd design choice. I've seen a few videos of people winding in the middle of a firefight.
I've always thought that should be an entirely fixable problem and considering the amount of money some players wrap up in the sport one that players would spend money on

I used to ref at an airsoft field about 12 yeas ago. About 7 or 8 years ago, i saw the evolution of the speedsoft gun. Double triggers and all that. It wasnt long after that, the fields evolved too.

You wouldn't have to ditch aesthetics completely. I can think of many IRL firearms that have a magazine which could be adapted to the feed system I'm talking about (i.e. something with the magazine on top of the gun); the Calico M-series if you wanted to go modern, the Lewis light machine gun if WWII is your jam, the Chauchat MG if you like WWI stuff, etc.
Hell, if you wanted to make a meta joke about firearms by way of airsoft (and paintball), do an American 180 build. That thing was a .22 caliber machine gun that ran at like 1,2000 rpm (20 rps) - the definitive moment where the real-steel community embraced paintball's mantra of "accuracy by volume". An airsoft version that ran even faster would be cool AF. And I'm pretty sure the community would eat it up, because all those real-steel versions I've mentioned share the common trait of never having a production airsoft replica made for them.
As to your statement about the Cyclone, yeah that tracks. Also you'd need some sort of spring-loaded plate on top of the ammo stack because as the magazine ran low "popcorning" would become a serious problem due to how light the projectiles are. I'm sure you could get away with a thicker "finger" given how much sturdier airsoft pellets are compared to paintballs, but if it would be enough for the design to work remains an open question.
