This pic was sent to me from my younger brother. I had no idea an image existed of it. We spent a week assembling a makeshift field in an unused land close to our parents' house. It brought half a dozen or so neighborhood kids to the sport. I remember carrying so many heavy logs that my wrists were so sore that I could not work for the next two days. I believe north is to the bottom left. One of the three bunkers at the bottom is a WWII style pillbox.

If it wasn't for semi-organized outlaw I don't think I would have ever really gotten into paintball at all.

Attached is a pic of what we lovingly referred to as the "Shit Pit", a municipal dumping grounds for the Concord NH DPW that we "totally didn't" play outlaw on for years in the late 90s and early 2000s. I will always love you Shitty P.

Played outlaw ball for many many years before venturing to Canobie Paintball in the 2000's because I couldn't get people one weekend.

At this point all the old places down in Massachusetts i used to play outlaw in are either developed or now No trespassing.

Those were the crazy days. Very few rules and playing whatever wild game you could come up with.

It was the same for us in the 80s. Originally a bunch of friends from school all got together, and played on a homebuilt field. The Woolworths up in the Maine Mall carried basic paintball supplies (only NSG, and Sheridan).
The rules we used were torso hits were an out, arms and leg hits immobilized you, but a medic could reactivate you. Headshots never counted because.... well.. we were using uvex goggles.

Then one day, only 2 of us showed up, so we decided to head out to Acton ME for a field we heard about at Woolworths. Then we heard about a field in Wells that was bigger... then by 1990, we were heading out to Triad, then seacoast, then Canobie, then Weare.

Paintball did not advertise back then, so finding fields was mostly word of mouth. Especially since it was considered a controversial activity back then. "violent war games".

I miss outlaw ball. My friends and I built a decent field on someone else’s property in New Milford, CT. Eventually, the owner showed up, but he was cool with it.

We used to get 10–20 players out there every Saturday, most of the year—except in winter.

I remember walking miles to find scrap wood and carrying it all the way back to the field.

Maybe I’m just glamorizing the past, but it feels like people were more open and friendly toward paintball back then.

I think it's partially rose colored lenses, but we used to play outlaw on a few different properties and more often than not when the owners caught us they just asked about the game and told us to be careful. We were playing outlaw on forestry land once and a ranger showed up and told us to keep the road clear and invite him next time. I think people were a bit less litigious back in the day so there wasn't as much of a concern about someone getting hurt on someone's land.

Grew up on Long Island and my first experience was in what we called “Wilson’s woods”. It was just undeveloped land with trash, etc . We made sandbags with trash bags, gathered broken wood etc and made pillboxes and such. It was a good time. That land is of course now all homes. I’ve never visited NY much after leaving when I was 19 or so. Still bums me out when I see what used to be those woods.
