The first I know of as a semi was the brass eagle barracuda.
But there was a pump that had the feed port on the pump handle that sit vertical..... Plus the wgp ranger and commando dropped in vertically but had offset feeds
those adds are great - I've been going back through trying to trace the history of the revy as well. Based on those adds it sure looks the like 98 was the year, and the bob long autocockers, STO's and angels are the 3 that first offered it, which one of those was actually first would be some fun trivia, or if it was something completely different. Still don't care for them!
I believe the '97 STO came in center feed, but I'm pretty sure the '97 Bob Long Cockers were still right feed at that time. The center feed Bob Long Signature Series came out in '98, I think. At least, that's what year mine is.
Bob long had exclusive rights on vertical feed cockers till the sto which dropped in 96. I have. Prototype cut on a bob long body. Shown below.... Knights were a wgp employee team these were their inhouse made team gun which evolved into the STO
Bud was monkeying with them since late 95. The first generation had shorter vertical feeds.
Id guess balance of a gun and feed rate both played into the decision to vertical becoming dominate. Around 97-98, the first electronic guns were coming out and it wasn't long before they were out shooting the Revy. Plus speedball formats made playing out both sides of a bunker with a smaller profile more important. That's arguably easier with a vertical feed.
