Tariffs and Selling Paintball Gear Over the Border (Not a political discussion)

Recently a prospective buyer brought up concerns about tariffs being charged on the purchase of a use paintball marker shipped from Canada to the USA and how the increased cost would make it uneconomical. It was great point to raise, and as I haven't shipped or ordered anything in a while I hadn't thought about the issue. Has anyone been hit with a tariff on buying used paintball markers/gear out of country? Be it a Canadian buying out of the US or an American buying out of Canada?

Friendly reminder to keep this non-political or it'll be deleted by mods.

If you're shipping used paintball equipment (e.g. a marker, parts, gear) from abroad into the U.S. as a private sale, here’s what to expect:
    🧾 Tariffs & Customs Duties

    1. Used paintball markers and parts
    • Paintball markers and complete receiver assemblies generally fall under HTS 9304.00.4000 and are subject to a duty rate of around 0.7% ad valorem—essentially duty-free or very low cost (customsmobile.com).
    • Parts and accessories (barrels, rails, valves, etc.) are under HTS 9305.10 or 9305.99, and in many rulings duty is free or very low (around 2–4%) (Wikipedia, customsmobile.com, hts-code.com).
    2. Protective gear and clothing
    • Goggles and masks are classified under 9506.99.6080 and usually are subject to a 4% ad valorem duty(customsmobile.com).
    • Paintball pants or gloves often fall under textile/apparel headings (e.g. HTS 6216 or 6211) carrying higher duties (up to ~16%) (customsmobile.com).
    3. Paint or consumables
    • Paintballs and paint are likely covered under other sport or toy-related headings (e.g., HTS 9503). Historic rulings classified them as toys and often duty-free, but also subject to Federal restrictions; you'd need up‑to‑date classification (customsmobile.com).

📦 Used vs. New: Any Difference?

Whether it’s used or new generally does not affect the duty classification—it's based on item category and value. There is no duty exemption just because it's used, though de minimis exemption (see below) can eliminate duties altogether for low-value shipments.
💵 De Minimis Rule & Tariff Thresholds
    • The U.S. provides a de minimis exemption: shipments valued at $800 or less from a single sender on a single dayare generally exempt from import duties and taxes (Reddit).

    🔥 Recent Tariff Increases?
    • Some new trade tariffs (e.g. 25% on goods from Canada or Mexico, 10‑60% from China) may apply to certain categories like firearms (HTS 9304, 9306, etc.) or Canadian-made paintballs specifically—but not usually on old used markers or gear from private sellers.
    • There are anecdotal reports of customers unexpectedly being assessed high duties (e.g. 28%) on used gear from Canada, even under the $800 threshold—but this may reflect CBP misclassification or confusion about duties vs. customs fees (Reddit, Reddit).
    • Officially, these retaliatory tariffs generally do not apply to Chapter 93 items from personal shipments—nor are private sales typically targeted under business or firm-level trade sanctions (Reddit).

    ✅ Summary Table
Marker / Receiver 9304.00.4000 ~0.7% (often effectively free)
    Marker parts & accessories 9305.10 / 9305.99 0–4%
    Goggles / protective mask 9506.99.6080 ~4%
Soft gear (pants, gloves) Textile apparel headings ~3–16%
Paintballs / refill kits Toy or sports supply codes Often duty-free
Plus, shipments under $800 are usually exempt entirely.
🧳 Practical Tips If You're Shipping:
    • Clearly state description, value, and “used sporting equipment” on customs form.
    • Break down components (marking it as used gear, not weapons).
    • Make sure shipments are under the $800 de minimis threshold.
    • Be cautious with CBP classification—low-dollar deals are seldom inspected, but misclassification can lead to fees.

    Bottom Line:

Yes, tariffs and duties can apply on imported paintball gear even if used—but they’re typically low or exempt, especially under $800. Some items like apparel or protective gear can carry higher rates (up to ~16%). Recent broader tariffs (e.g. on imported paint or goods from Canada/China) usually do not affect private used-item shipments under these personal use provisions, although misapplication occasionally

The $800 de minimus exemption currently applies to shipments from Canada to the US but is scheduled to phase out on August 29th, 2025.

How in the hell we are supposed to cope with 1.5 billion more packages a year being subject to full customs inspection, I have no idea.

Im not 100% sure, I was pissed so I chucked the paperwork... My dumb arse bought it through Mastersconi on Ebay, Canada border services slapped a $38+ change tariff for "aluminum" on it. If I recall right it was labeled as a machine part. I probably should of disputed it... Dealing with the Canadian Gov and CBSA hassle wasn't worth the 40 imo...

I've been using 9305.99.50.10 for component shipments. It's specific to paintball.
Based on the site here (https://hts.usitc.gov/search?query=9305.99.50.10) it looks like Canada/ Mexico/ US have a special agreement without tariffs, it's typically 3.9%, and it's 70% in "Column 2" (which is Cuba and N Korea presently).

Screwing up that number might make it far pricier, if it's merely listed as "aluminum" or something like that.

Nearly everything I've bought since March has incurred some sort of fee on it - whether it is tariffs, CBSA fees (new, $10+ for processing costs), or customs charging taxes etc.

          That's coming into Canada.

Going out, I haven't heard much from my buyers - oddly, people on here seldom let me know if they've received the items they purchased.
And God turned to Gabriel and said: “I shall create a land called Canada of outstanding natural beauty, with majestic mountains soaring with eagles, sparkling lakes abundant with bass and trout, forests full of elk and moose, and rivers stocked with salmon. I shall make the land rich in oil so the inhabitants prosper and call them Canadians, and they shall be praised as the friendliest of all people.”

“But Lord,” asked Gabriel, “Is this not too generous to these Canadians?”

And God replied, “Just wait and see the neighbors I shall inflict upon them."

On used gear? The only way anyone knows what's inside is if you declare it.

Call it scrap metal, for all the post office knows you are shipping broken items to be recycled anyway

Trbo323 - Suppose I can always ship it with a piece removed and list it for repair. Value is where issues pop up and after having US Customs lose my Tippmann Factory F/A that I, for once, did not properly insure, I'd live to avoid that expensive lesson.

I've had too many items held and/or refused at the border (coming my way) because of an "inaccurate description" to recommend that route to anyone.

Every package gets Xrayed coming into Canada, AFAIK. It will get caught.

And CBSA has zero compunction about opening packages and zero concern with ensuring every part makes it back in, so disassembled markers are a bad idea.

I shipped several packages in the last few months, I am not aware of any tarifs charged. They where all small value and all under the $800 exemption.
But this will no longer apply after August 28th, the exemption is suppose to end starting on the 29th

The worst thing is you cannot even send some parts for milling work, anodising or repair... since there is no code of the part is going back to Canada after... tarrif on the way to the USA and duty fees comming back to Canada

I don't recommend misrepresenting anything. As already mentioned, customs officials can and will inspect any package up to opening the thing and you do not want to be caught circumventing the law

I asked an NZ seller to label a marker as a pneumatic actuator some years ago. Not inaccurate, and didn't have a customs issue.
