.... As cool as that is, are those actual torches? Like, open flame in a wooden castle... in the woods?

I mean, I 100% admit that's cool as hell, and I'd kill and help hide the body for a chance to play there, but "open flame" and "wooden fort" seems a bit risky.

Here's one from my local area, a Cold War era military base:

The story in a nutshell is this place was a 50's "listening station"- as in, listening for the Soviets- and when the military left on the 70s, this building was used for a couple of trial projects, but none paid out and it was abandoned by the 80s. We started playing paintball there in the 90s 'til we got kicked out a few years later.

But for a while, it was a perfect place for indoor-in-the-winter play. Sure, no heat or lights, but dry floors, lots of rooms and columns (a lot of walls had been vandalized and smashed even back then) and hey, it's not like we could have damaged anything. That'd be like banging a dent in the fender of car that's already been crushed into a cube.

I'm told it's since been demolished- that photo is from 2005- and the place is now an empty field.

Im pretty sure the structures at Sherwood are old railroad ties. You can smell the creosote in them. I dont think they burn all too well as a result.

They are the tiki torch tops you can buy at the store and use for a barbecue. There is really no risk of starting a fire. I lived in Alaska for several years and now I live out here near Kentucky; the humidity and risk of fires is a night and day difference. I’m almost confident I could take a blowtorch to that railroad tie castle in the height of summer and nothing would burn.

Also that Cold War base is very unique. There’s a field in Indiana called Blast Camp that’s built in a Cold War Missile Radar Base that looks very similar. They still have all of the concrete structures standing.

A few greats Ive played have been mentioned.

Obviously jeagers is a bucket list place. Its unique being in a cave, and its always playing weather in there. I've been back 4 times, I have made the bob white caveball weekend a yearly must go trip in my schedule.

Sherwood is up there with the railroad tie buildings everywhere. I haven't been there since they put the pirate ship in the center pond, but Id like to. I heard they arent what they used to be since splitting with payroll productions for big games.

Fort knox is a other cool one. Flatish, but they have suspension bridges that cross over a massive center pond. It makes taking the field pretty fun.

There is a place near me called area 22 paintball Id like to try. Its never open when I pass. I assume its private games only, but the field has old corn silos as bunkers that look like a blast to fight for.

Champion valley, formally MN Pro Paintball, had some cool fields. Its owned by Matt Ames, so they got a ton of flawed concrete sewer tubes from games construction. They buried some in the dirt with the ends open allowing you to play the tunnel under, or fight over the mounds. I've not been there in years. They used to run a charity game for children's hospital. Since they dropped that, and changed to champion valley, I have not seen a reason to go.

Splat tag ( and its affiliate field Twin cities paintball) are my home fields for a big reason. There are some awesome structures there. Darrin, the owner sinks most of his revenue back into cool stuff for structures. And hes spent years traveling to fields for big games, and taking inspiration back to Splat tag. He buys boats, buses, cars, shipping containers, raw construction materials, and plops them all over the place making fun battle fields.

They have a railroad tie structure with 2 stories that resembles sherwood. They have a massive plywood castle in a valley surrounded by woods for atrack defend games, and many more sweet structures, planes nosed into the ground, cars, ect. They have a new field called apple cart that has apples from a defunct tilt-a-whirl amongst other cool structures.

At the sister field twin cities paintball, and airsoft. They have a mini city made out of concrete block. My dad and I helped build walls for that city years back.

They have a course of stacked shipping containers on the 50. You can take stairs up to the bridge and shoot down on the enemy.

The big thing I love about Splat tag over most every other field Ive played at, is elevation.

Most fields are mainly flat, Splat tag is far from it. Some people dont like this, but I love it. It is harder to get around yes, but you can literally play any way you want with the terrain. I play in nothing but shrubbery quite often as I try to crawl a good angle out on my opponent. You dont see tanks coming til they crest hills and it creates a much more of a chaotic battle. Rather than the firing lines that almost always form at flat fields.

I will second Fort Knox. It is quite flat and small but very enjoyable. Here’s a couple pictures took over the years. It will always astonish me as to how they acquired actual highway signs.

How did signs from my area wind up on a paintball field in Kentucky?

I talked to the old guy once at Knox about the field... He gets most of the stuff from auctions and scrapping from municipalities.
The cars and some of the boats were mostly donated from people in the area looking to get rid of a junker.
I'm so fortunate to live near three fields that are really unique playing experiences (Sherwood, Knox and Blast Camp).
Also like playing down at Paintball Barn down near Attica IN.
The farm implement field is very unique.

V TOWN is Vasselboro Maine has a a few neat fields.

they have 2 small fields full of limousines, Mercedes military vehicles, fire trucks (full size), UPS like trucks, airplanes, etc

and then they have a boat field that is full of old fiberglass boats, the boats are not just on the field, they are dug into the field - some stern first, some bow, you can climb up into them and shoot out of windows. I found a spot to be a bout 10’ off the ground and shoot through a small opening. The ground is all Astro turf and it feels like you are playing on the town model in beetlejuice. Very trippy. Owner is cool and he has a Rottweiler that is basically the only ref (welcome to maine paintball)

        I have better photos somewhere

Local shipping company had a pile of these busted wind deflectors that we took off their hands and made a field out of. Those blue barrels are typical 55gal barrels for scale. Coolest part was that these things were easy to tip over and drag around, stacked reasonably well, and were forgiving if anyone ran into them.

PRZ was a very unique field it reminded me of our outlaw field I use to play “The Bricks” that was an Abandoned Brick/ Cement factory. Had a lot of fun playing on the Hudson River as a kid. Now it’s a resort for city folk to vacation at. We use to ride our ATV in the stone quarries and cliff jump into the quarry ponds. Big Catfish too.

PRZ was a massive warehouse like structure its was a CQB dream scape. With several floors and wild structures inside and out the facility. Located in Canada they really let you run wild there. It was a bit dangerous by US standards but apparently due to Canada not having a massive sue culture like the US it worked. Man was that place a lot of fun. People said it was an “abandoned insane asylum” I didn’t see evidence of that. However it was definitely a cool spot to play that unfortunately no longer exists. I’m glad I had the opportunity to play there before it closed its doors for good.

Another outlaw field that was played in an abandoned theme park I never got to play but heard a bunch of stories about. I wish I could have experienced, I forget the name. But I always wanted to get out and play there but I was big into tournament Paintball at the time and never made time for it unfortunately.

CPX I believe had one that was like all old movie sets with various themes that is no longer around as well.

I went to a game in NJ that was some sort of factory that did a Airsoft style mil sim game but with paintball that was a lot of fun. It was supposed to run into a yearly thing but only ended up happening one time. I forgot what they called it but it was definitely interesting field. Lots of CQB indoor room clearing with objectives and a lot of the rooms still had furniture and some stuff still in it. I believe they demolished it now.

The 3 storey castle at Sherwood is insane, but I also am a fan of the church and mausoleum out back with its tunnel and tomb stones. Pictures don't do it justice. Basically the whole field was built at a smaller scale than the "real world" so it plays amazing for paintball and airsoft.

The second Flag Raiders location on Kossuth Rd., before they moved to Bingaman's adventure Park had an amazing 2 story 10,000 sq. ft. "Drug Lab/Embassy"with multiple entrances and rooms that pucked my butt a few times. The Marine Firebase below the hilltop bunker system on Hill 3322 was amazing too, highest spot, nearly in the middle of the field. The Bingaman's location also had an awesome Church and cemetery, but my favorite was the "Abbotabad Complex" which was like an Afghan warlord's hideout, complete with goat pens out back.

And then there is PRZ. Or was, sadly. Probably the greatest paintball field ever, complete with 2 and 3 story hospital and administration buildings, with plenty of outdoor "maps" around them. I can't do it justice in words, just Google search images of PRZ Paintball if you haven't seen it.

I used to play at a place called Iron Triangle. The owner knew a guy that did garage doors so he had dozen of old ones. They’re were nailed to 2x 4s and set up in a speedball sized field It was intense. The place was in rough shape when I was there but there were some crazy fields.
