    800 psi output tank regulators

Bought an HK HP8 tank regulator, because it was advertised as 800 psi output preset. Got it in the mail, threw it on a tank, filled it up, installed it on my automag and proceeded to pop both newly installed macroline fittings. When I mean pop, I mean 1 fitting had the sealing collar sheer completely off sending it across the room, while the other fitting poped the macroline out and fused the collar to the main body. WTH, this shouldn't happen?! Hooked the tank up to a pressure tester and it read 890 psi output with the psi slowly settling to 820 psi. Tested it 4 more times and each time charging the pressure tester line the gauge would spike between 865 and 900 psi and settle down between 820 to 830 psi. So turns out this regulator is great for a high pressure build but will completely trash macroline fittings.

So far the only regulator that I trust is my old Ninja ultralight. That thing will consistently output 800 psi, +/- 5 psi no matter what.

Does anyone know if there are tank regulators on the market that will reliably output 800 psi?

I pretty much exclusively use Powerhouse or Ninja regs, and as long as you service them semi-regularly they will maintain output pressure well.

I'm surprised 900 psi blew apart your macroline fittings. I'd think they should withstand some margin beyond 800 or 850 psi

I really don't know what happened. It could have been bad fittings. They where from a manufacturer I've never used before. Maybe the reg spiked more than 900 psi when this happened. This is something i've never experienced before.

I doubt 900psi will do that to a macro fitting. Your tank should have a burst disk to keep it from spiking input pressure. It may have been set wrong from the factory but I have put way more then 1k psi to standard macro fittings. You sure the fitting wasn’t damaged?

These fittings where from Oregon Paintball. A visual inspection showed no sign of damage. Was able to insert and remove the macroline before gassing up the line.

Low side burst disk is 1800 psi?

I would degas the tank and take the reg apart. It sounds like there's an intermittent issue with a seal/seat, or maybe the spring pack isn't broken in yet or needs grease.

Maybe try the new macroline fittings with an old reg you have. One variable at a time. I agree with others that 900psi shouldn't blow macroline fittings. I wouldn't recommend it for much past 800psi, but I know that wasn't your intent.

It could possibly be related to the hose. A more flexible hose may only be rated for 400psi working pressure. Though those do tend to burst somewhere in the middle of the hose. But the hose stiffness also contributes to the strength of the fitting.

Honestly I prefer good old braided hose for this kind of application.

Thanks, but I'm In the process of converting one of my mags over to line more suitable for HP. Its possible the take reg was jacked up to begin with. In any case I've not fed a mag HP in a very long time, and look forward to having fun slinging paint in up coming scenarios.
