Suppressor for Inception designs threaded tip

    Hello,

Has anyone ever made or found a suppressor that fits this barrel tip. Only interested if it changes the sound signature.

    Thanks,
    Brandon

I think the only real ones out there are the Carter Whoosh or copies but I don't think they're Inception threads.

If you’re referring to the Inception Stella barrel tips, then they are 7/8 - 20 threads. All of the Lapco tips will fit including the Ported Fake Suppressor. Here is a picture.

-As has been mentioned a few times on this board, an actual suppressor is a bit of a grey area. Doesn't matter if it was made for an airgun or paintball gun- it wasn't that long ago the ATF made no distinction, since one made for a paintball gun could be hand-held over the muzzle of a firearm, and if it moderated the sound 1dB or more, it was, to them, legally a "suppressor".

Now, in recent years, more and more people have come out with suppressed air guns, at first by having the suppressor built into the gun- that is, not removable. Later, people started making removable ones, and in one court case, a felon was caught with one on an air gun. The ATF tried to nail him for it, but he more or less successfully argued that the airgun was not a firearm (therefore he, as a felon, was not barred from possessing) and the suppressor was intended for that airgun, and therefore again, not firearms-related.

Since then the ATF has declined to prosecute anyone selling airgun suppressors. (Although they have pretty heavily gone after the Chinese companies selling "filter kits" and "muffler kits" on places like eBay.)

The trick here is that technically, an airgun suppressor is still illegal- the ATF has simply opted to decline to prosecute. And that, of course, can change overnight whenever a new administration comes in.

Which is what makes it a grey area. The ATF probably won't care if you 3D print one at home, or make your own out of PVC tubing, etc. but very well could go after a manufacturer who is mass-producing them. Maybe they will, or maybe they won't- but you likely won't find many manufacturers that will risk it, since the penalty is potentially shutting your business down and confiscating your machines and business records. Just ask Barrels Of America (BOA) how well that worked out for them.

And don't expect that to change anytime soon, unless or until there's an official decree- an actual written law, something the ATF can't just change their mind on, on a whim or depending on who's in the White House. (See "arm braces" for that one.)

Bottom line? You might find somebody to 3D print you one, but I don't think you'll find a proper, professionally-machined one, if that's what you're after.

I've made them for shits and giggles.... On most paintball guns I saw no improvement on sound signature

The Whoosh make a slight difference on the receiving end of a paintball by directing a lot of the porting back toward the user. Finding the right packing material is key.

I drilled out an Airsoft mock onto slip fit over a 1” barrel because it was all aluminum and can be anodized for a pistol project I’m working on.

-Really? Then you made them wrong.

Over the years I got to try a handful of them- technically 'commercial' products from back in the garage-shop days, though I did get to try one of the nicely-made injection-molded TASO ones.

None made the gun "silent"- that's probably not possible- but all of them moderated the shot to one extent or another. I can recall the local Radio Shack had a proper decibel meter in the display case, I always wanted to get that and do some proper testing.

They also all used the same design- a perforated tube wrapped with some kind of absorbent foam. I've always wanted to try a more modern baffle design, but once i got the capability of making such a thing, there's no way in hell I'd try. Back then, one place got nailed for making keychain sized baffles.

I understand some people have tried some 3D printed designs, but I don't recall hearing how they performed. (And no, that's not a pun. )

If there is still positive pressure at the muzzle, a baffle will moderate the soundwave it makes.

But yeah, dampening a (just to pull a number out of my ass) 90dB Sheridan by 10%, is a lot more noticeable than dampening a (again, a transsphincter number) 50dB Shocker by the same amount.

Although we did still have some of those silencers into the shoebox and Tornado'ed 'Cocker days...

Thing is, most of the people looking to use a "real" silencer these days tends to be mil-sim and woodsballer types, who generally lean toward blowbacks.

The inception barrels are nice for this, you simply print a cover from the thread portion back over the porting, venting toward the user. It doesn’t need any baffles or foam, and can’t be retrofitted to other things without tools.

These are all mock suppressors... Looks only, no actual suppression:
