JT Triad - My woes with used loaders.

So classic me story, I bought a cheap used all black JT Triad (v3) for $70 shipped to my door (which in hindsight wasn't even the best of deals). Anaaaaaad it didn't work right, this thing clearly has seen some mileage. I wrote this entire post before going back and looking at the pictures from the seller, he re-assembled the loader wrong at some point. Originally I was going to post this in ask the experts, but I've spent a couple hours today becoming an expert. Still open to any feedback/suggestions/other experiences!

So anyhow I took it out to the field for the first time this weekend and it was... not good. First point couldn't ramp, 2nd point I managed to break a bunch of balls and still wasn't ramping consistently (for some reason after the first point I just thought it was a skill issue or nerves or something). I switched to a Spire V and different barrel and had 0 issues over the course of a case and change of paint. I was using a 180r with 15-20kish shots on it, freshly cleaned and serviced.

In testing after rebuilding the loader tonight I suspect the ball breaking thing was unrelated, I had 2 barrel breaks in a single loader of paint using a .691 insert w/ my field one acculock barrel. Day of I started with the F1 barrel and a 683 insert (which at the time was overboring for the smallish draxxus paint), and swapped to a 685 PE insert in a crbn nano barrel.... So maybe there's two issues at play here, I'll have to crack open another bag of paint and solve that another day.

    Issues I've had:

If you load the hopper while turned off, it will just spin forever.. I've got a 15 second video of it struggling to get balls into the chamber, it takes a couple vigorous shakes to get balls to fall into the impeller? so weird.

Can't keep up with NXL ramping - this one I suspect is that the drive oring fell off the tensioner(?)pulley and was just dragging on the shaft instead of the pulley. Post-repair it seems to maintain ramping just fine.

When I pulled it apart I also noticed that brass drive gear has a ton of play in the lower bearing. I'll probably order a replacement kit Part #310555 the next time I get around to ordering from ANS. It's also worth noting that this assembly is held in double shear when you put it back together, so this should be a non issue, but maybe it explains why the oring fell off the pulley? I unfortunately didn't think to take a picture of the bottom of the tray before tearing down.

Oring stretched 2mm beyond original spec (per the worlds finest digital estimators)- obviously fixable, you can order 46 from the Oring store for $5.06, or one from most vendors for $2.95 Part #31044 w/ ANS link. I'm throwing one in my next ANS order, and a bazillion on my next Oring Store order, I'll do some science to make sure they match. Per ANS it's a 2mmx42mm buna 70 oring.

The speed feed is mediocre just like the identical halo pro - spend money get the spring loaded finger style one simple enough

Final issue, if it's tilted down even a little the assist ramp wont roll balls back - the spring is probably just past its prime, I'll order one of those soon™

    Lessons learned:
if you're tearing it down just unplug all the leads from the mainboard, they're all super obvious... trying to do tetris with them hooked up is annoying.

when you re assemble the casing over the drive setup use a pick to pull the tip of the brass shaft into place, it has a hole milled into it

AAAAND as I eluded I went looking for pictures and found that it was shipped to me assembled incorrectly.

it *should* look like this, with the little bronze tip showing:

I always laugh when I see Empire/JT sponsored teams running the Halo Pro instead of this thing. I never had an issue with any of my old Halo loaders back in the day, aside from disassembly and cleaning, which seems to be solved with the new Pro shell.

Funny you should mention that, I've got a Halo too w/ pro shell on my Etha3m. It's kinda big for only holding 180 balls (vs the Triad 215), but so far mine has 'just worked' so the jury is out I suppose.

I still much prefer the Triad aesthetics, now that it's fixed and will soon have a new drive oring I'm gonna give it one more chance before I sell it off.

Just for posterity, this video outlines how to align the drive pully when you replace the belt:

I didn’t know anyone even used these seriously, I thought they were universally seen as junk

Used rotors and LTRs go for $50 or less, I’ve stashed like 3, and they work flawlessly with no adjustment

I've got an LTR that's served me well, unless I buy a DRV the LTR is going to be on my marker for mech tournaments. My two complaints are they don't sell the high cap top shell anymore and loader hits anywhere near the top trim piece are annoying to clean up. I don't care how dirty my gear gets on the day, but I do like to have everything very clean before I play again 😅

That said, the LTR/R2 are pretty polarizing, maybe not in the same way the Triad is but they've earned their fair share of haters. Mine is yet to jam, but I've definitely seen it happen to other folks.

              The triads were notoriously crappy.

              Sorry bud.

and, if it doesn't "just work", there's always the rip drive to keep you somewhat in the game. Any other loader, in the event of dead batteries or a jam, you're just down. The Rotor does have the little anti-jam lever which is the next best thing, but it's not the same. I've played entire days of recball using just a rip drive, it's doable and no more painful than playing pump lol

the v3 allegedly fixed it, more than anything I made this post because there was so little about the Triad issues and wanted someone down the line to be able to learn from my couple hours of tinkering

I was also dissapointed with my Triad. I intended it to be a replacement for my tried and true VLocity, but it can't even keep up a consistent 10.5 ramp. And mines still essentially brand new. I used it for 3 days, and it's never seemed to work right, I even replaced the batteries with brand new ones (the first set was also new but I thought maybe they could've been a bad batch?) and nope, same issue. Feeds maybe 8-12 on gun max. How can we not know how to make a fast loader by now. The eggy 2 could do 15bps all day and it came out in 2002.

I laughed seeing the adrenaline ICPL team use these for one event claiming they were "amazing, no issues, feed like a monster" and immediately switched back to rotors and said nothing about it... If it's so good, why go back to the rotor??

lmao yeah, I think it might have been OK at $125, but they're $175 retail now 😂

Ryan Greenspan used a Triad at one of his clinics I went to, then when he was back in town for a scrimmage 2 months later I notice he was using a Spire. I asked "Hey Ryan, what happened to the your Triad loader." He just said in passing "Well, right now I need a loader that works..." and left it at that.

I must note that he was using a pre mass production model which I heard had even worse issues than the production editions. I thought they'd solved all the major issues by the most recent edition but maybe they haven't. Mine is a launch model.

This is all good information for me. I have been curious about the Triads and thought about picking one up but it sounds like sticking with my trusty spire IR2 and Rotor is the way to go.

The rotor feeds plenty fast for anything I can imagine and hasn't seemed to jam much for me. I just wish it held a little more paint. Its hard to get a full 150 round pod in there with a speed feed unless the rotor is nearly empty. The bit higher capacity is what intrigued me with the triads.

JT Triad is the only loader I've owned where I accidentally dropped it from about waist height and it just stopped working. Thankfully, it was used so I wasn't out too much, but there's so many other reliable loaders out there (rotors, IR2's, etc.) that you should steer clear of these.
