freshest best paint from online retailer?

The only company other than a field or proshop I've bought from in recent history was Lone Wolf PB and it was decent. I got Proshar and only had a couple broken balls in the case.

I must have missed something. Why do others prefer not to order from ANS?

They have very bad service. Every online retailer will occasionally have inventory mistakes but ANS handles them the worst. If you order something shown in stock but it turns out to be out of stock, they'll just put it on backorder with zero attempt to notify the customer. It usually takes them several days to even process a payment before they make an attempt to find the item, so if you do something like order something you need for next Sunday and pay for shipping that should deliver it on Thursday (reasonable safety margin), you probably won't even know there's a problem until Thursday night, when it'll be too late to find an alternative before you were going to play. Some people have even gotten items delivered over a year later that they had forgotten about with zero communication the whole time.

I switched to another source (BFPGear) and they also had inventory mistakes a couple times, but they always had a real human call me within a day to tell me they were out of stock and ask if I wanted to backorder it, substitute something, cancel the item, or cancel the whole order. That's the right way to treat customers. I never had to cancel weekend plans with friends because of them.
