    Some info on Lapco barrels

So I picked up a Lapco PicoShot AC barrel recently and contacted Lapco to get more info on it just because I was curious. I’ve never seen a PicoShot barrel before so I thought it’ll be cool to get some history on it and share it here.

”LAPCO pioneered paintball barrel bore sizing between 1987 and 1989. In the early years, we identified each bore size by a product name rather than marking its actual diameter:

    • Super BigShot: .693 — designed for humid conditions and for use with systems such as Automag Z-bodies and Cooper-T backspin bolts. These systems imparted backspin to extend the ball’s range, serving a function similar to the later Apex barrel tips.
    • BigShot: .690
    • AutoSpirit: .687
    • MicroShot: .684
    • PicoShot: .682

The MicroShot and PicoShot were documented by 1996, although they may have been introduced earlier.

As bore sizing became more widely adopted—and online ordering began replacing traditional brick-and-mortar retail—we simplified the product line. Beginning in the early 2000s, we used the BigShot name across the barrel range because it was our most recognized barrel, while marking each barrel with its actual bore size.

Your PicoShot appears to come from that transitional period: after we began marking bore sizes on the barrels, but before we retired the individual model names.

I hope this history is helpful for your forum post.

    Best regards,

Interesting. Thank you for sharing. Hard to believe that there was paint in the .682 range or even presuming that one day it may be viable in 1996.

.665 is the lowest bore insert size I have. Maybe I need something smaller for 2056.

Thats weird because I thought all lapco barrels were gun drilled out of solid aluminum. "Trouble getting materials" tells me they need thick wall tubing with a small enough bore.

Last time I contacted them, they wouldn’t make them without the pump PB guy. Even offered to buy a full run of them.

I always wanted to see if I could ask Lapco to make a run. Now I see it is not possible.

I had one of their snapshots a while back. I LOVED THAT BARREL.

        Wish it were still around.

And here I thought the Auto Spirit was more like .685. Eh, what's an extra .002 anyways? Thanks for sharing.

I sold whole set of AC barrels here when I stopped shooting cockers. It included all the ones you list and two pico shots, one of which had wedgits from PPS. I needed the dough.

It did not include the Z barrel. I've never seen a super big shot branded that way.

But the Pico's were from the 2000s like the email says I had mine around 2004

I have a BigShot from 2000 (maybe) in F4/Prolite threads that's .689. I wonder if Lapco was making small adjustments to the bore size over the years.

I’m sure they adjusted based on what was selling. Especially With paint getting progressively smaller over time.

Big shot was originally .689 and if its unlabeled that's what it will be. Maybe new ones they just round up..

Auto spirit was always .687 which was small bore at the time. This was an all around correct barrel in the 2000s for me.

More recently they label barrels big shot and then have the bore size written on it.

Regarding gun drilled barrels when I asked them about that (it was on the front page of their website but no longer part of the description of the big shot and single bore one piece barrels they were selling) they would not give me a straight answer.

The MCB user B I remember having some kind if snaffu or issue with lapco and I believe it was associated with the matter of gun drilling vs honing a pre existing tube like everyone else does.

But I'm not sure because as I said I didn't get a straight answer when I asked.

I remember they were gun drilled out of billet.
And that was something they noted that made them different.

I dont know if they still do.

Here is a quote from mage at lapco to me in 2020

I'm sharing it because I wanna be clear that lapco has been my favorite company for almost ever and remains such and I use their barrels whenever they suit my application.

I just realized my postings could be interpreted negatively and want to be clear that I love this company and whenever I email them someone right at the top responds promptly.

                  "Hi Steve,
I don't understand why you say our advertising has changed. We have always said "Gun Drilled" when talking about the manufacturing process. Now we have not used the manufacturing process as a topic in our advertising as of late that is true.

Rest assured our barrels are the absolute best. LAPCO is made by the same people in the same place. We even used to make Hammerhead barrels along time ago. First-Strike can get their barrels made any in the world, but they come to us. We set the standard for precision products. How many times I have heard sales guy at events and such say their china crap is just as good as LAPCO.
We don't sell gimmicks just to make a buck (straight rifling for example). We critically inspect several times during production and even hand hone each and every barrel.
Our 3-decade reputation is on the line with every shot.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
                  ~Mage"

They really are the best. One product that is a surprise is their duckbill Asa's that are so smooth and vent so perfectly you'd almost never even think to want an on off.
