    Planet Eclipse LV2 - pseudo recall/part fix

Saw this on FB this morning, figured I'd post here as well. Seems there's a potential safety issue with the HPR adjustment going too far and causing the HPR to unseat itself from the body:

Personal commentary not necessary for the top post:

Holy fuck PE needs to get a better technical writer. So much self-congratulatory and condescending language. It comes off as if a cocky 16 year old with daddy's new mustang wrote it, very "we're so good, we're fixing something that you idiots messed up!" IMO.

I mean, good on them for addressing it, but leave the marketing bull out of it. It's a safety bulletin, one step down from an actual recall, not a sales brochure.

It is over the top, to the point where I can't even be sure its not deliberately sarcastic/tongue-in-cheek. Like they're saying "Yeah this is ridiculous, the user is totally at fault, but you know what let's go ahead and prevent that anyway before some doofus sends the assembly rocketing across a field.'

      "PE LV2 Voluntary Part Recall:

Backing out your HPR velocity screw too far can cause unexpected and dangerous behavior. We have created a replacement part to fix the issue. Please contact us if you have an LV2"

My best guess knowing some of the dedicated and astounding folks that work for PE is this message was sent out at the tail end of a very long, stressful day trying to get this issue addressed as quickly as possible.

Yeah... I'm surprise you guys don't expect this type of virtue signaling from corp. communications.

I know there are safety regulations imposed on tank mfrs. Are there safety regulations imposed on paintball gun mfrs? Same regulations may apply... anyone know? Being able to unthread a tank regulator is worse than the HPR, but the problem is quite similar.

most air tools don't have many if any kind of certification on them. safety regulations mostly apply to the non-pressure-regulated pressure source.

translation: we designed something that easily converts into a pressure bomb and it's all your fault.

Translation: We did not sufficiently idiot-proof the HPR. And since the consequences of this (reasonably foreseeable) misuse involves a piece of metal flying out of the marker with a few hundred psi behind it, we're dropping everying and fixing this.

Fun fact I learned in first-year Torts in law school: The fact that a failure was caused by what is technically a misuse of a product does not necessarily absolve the manufacturer from liability. Manufacturers must account for reasonably foreseeable misuse, especially misuse that could easily occur accidentally.

On the other hand, if a user ignores clear and conspicuous safety warnings, particularly against doing things that would be obviously dangerous to a reasonable user anyway, the manufacturer is not liable for the resulting injury even if the type of injury is not the one that the safety warnings were designed to prevent. For example, taking the blade guard off a power tool with a spinning blade obviously carries a risk of feeding your fingers into the blade. But if you ignore the stickers saying not to run it with the guard removed and as a result the tool launches the spinning blade into your kneecap, that's still on you. Because all the manufacturer had to do was warn you not to do it because it was dangerous; they didn't have to specify exactly how it was dangerous. Hood v. Ryobi.

The Automag: Not as clumsy or random as an electro. An elegant marker for a more civilised age.

Agreed. Reasonable misuse is something I deal with regularly (risk management at a medical device manufacturer). They're going above and beyond, but I can do without the extra commentary.

Medical device is worse depending on the classification of device. I've done surgical tools, implants, life sustaining, and life supporting devices (the top of the mountain). It's not only reasonable misuse, but it's anything we train them to do or not do, any single-fault failure mode, sometimes any double-fault failure mode, interactions with other devices... it takes months to think through, evaluate the technical details, test it, test it again... If you ever wonder why medical devices seem so basic at times, it's because the barrier for entry costs a fortune. zinger565 we should share stories by a campfire some day.

Sounds like PE needs to find more idiots to beta test their gear =P

Planet Eclipse gave us the LV2. A bespoke marker for top professionals.

Thank you PE, meet Topher. He booger mines 2 knuckles deep. He was fired from Dominos after he sent dick pics to his shift manager. He aspires to be "agg".

The challenge in idiot-proofing is that of course, there are always bigger idiots.

Idiot proofing hovers around version 2.7.

Idiot is proudly repping version 69.69.

Remember when they tried to explain that they made their trigger frames failure prone on purpose. For the safety of the player.

as if anyone would intentionally have the 100 dollar trigger frame and 150 dollar board be cracked in half instead of a 10 dollar asa rail.
