And thus ends the 8 gram era.

While separate it still looks like they want you to remove the mag before changing CO2 carts. I’m sure there’s a reason for that but it seems like a PITA in an actual paintball game.

I think it's probably a liability thing. I'd imagine the concern is that if the CO2 is pierced with a round in the chamber there is a possibility that the sear doesn't catch the bolt and it fires unintentionally.

Lemme guess - whole new magazine design?

It's good to see more pistols on the market although I'd rather there were some options with ultra small hpa tanks and less of a milsim style.

Totally. I’m max sick of the wannabe killer vibe. The guts of this thing could be in something great though. If it looked like a WoW Laser Tag pistol or Barbarellas’s gun then probably $450 wouldn’t seem as expensive to me.

I dunno, it’s a bit a sus to me. I’ve owned the original FSC since… 2018? It only shoots FS reliably. It’s an absolute blender with RB. Some guys have gone to great lengths to modify the FSC to be gentler on RB but for a sidearm it’s just not the worth the hassle imo. I still run the FSC with First Strike rounds though, mostly in the backyard these days.

I suspect that this is primarily a production cost reduction. Mags with integrated air are costlier to produce and, costs more on the consumer end. Additionally, if you are maintaining mags for dozens of folks, there's a lot more maintenance involved.

First Strike is the sister company to Pepperball, IIRC. I don't think this was designed primarily for us recreational folks. More likely we're seeing a product that was originally designed to be competitive with other less lethal product lines (guns from other makers). The #1 projectile product in the less lethal industry is the pepperball a .68 roundball with the same shell material as the FS Round, which means, they don't compress in the mag. Which means that if you get your follower length right, every ball will be in the right position for every shot.

Magazines for gelatin shelled paint have to account for rounds being a little lopsided, and they compress (more in warmer, wetter weather) so, the good guns have accommodations (ramped bolts, etc) that you don't see (as much of) in the less lethal guns.

If you check out Pepperball's site, this gun is the older model. A new model (Sentry 68) is out now, or coming very soon. It's a different design that uses a pretty innovative (in my opinion) method of activating the 12g- you pull the trigger guard rearward.

I had to do a double take on the price.

              Ffs why?

Yeah. The high price was part of why I thought it was less than lethal at first glance. Usually teeny pistol+$$$=home defense.

I guess they probably need the extra money in the bank to lawyer up against the inevitable lawsuits that will result when a company sells both a) sporting equipment for tweens and up that is designed to ideally never cause injury while also selling the b) exact same thing but marketed/designed in such a way as to fuck people up on purpose as bad as possible without requiring the owner be responsible enough to any kind of training or a license. It can be mechanically identical to a paintball gun in every way but once you intentionally transition from selling toys to weapons there are going to be additional costs associated with running the company. It’s a different company at that point.

I suspect that this is exactly why First Strike is selling this gun through ANS vice Pepperball. A separate enough company to manage all the 'make it safe' requirements, and practically, there aren't any additional requirements- it's all about pressure regulation, which the paintball industry has tons of experience. Additionally, the pepperball standard products and their shaped projectile (lighter than the FN303) are 3g to 3.4g.

Based on my experience with the FSC paint blender, I was amazed to see Rorey get 12 actual paintballs out of 2 mags with no breaks on the ANS video. I spent a couple hours smoothing out the bore lips and other tweeks on my sons FSC and it improved allot, but typically broke the last ball in every mag. that + 8 grams = expensive toy. Wished this had come out sooner.

Thats another thing that makes it seem home defense-y. If it’s designed to sit in a drawer for its entire existence waiting for a home invasion that is almost definitely never coming then it doesn’t actually have to work for beans. If it was designed to sell lots of cheap paint it would be expected to be able to do it.

$450? Really? AfaIk they haven't even made repair kits for the FSC yet. Wow.

These are designed for less lethal in places that firearms are illegal. I took the class at PBE half a decade ago and they specifically mentioned that.

The stupidest thing you could do is carry a non lethal launcher that looks like a gun but can't save your life. Try pepper spray.

Yeah and that's great in theory. In reality a lot of these non-lethal options are launching stuff around the velocities that we use to play paintball. Hell there's some of these that shoot at slower velocity

So apparently on a paintball field the same velocity is contributing to a sport that statistically has one of the lowest rates of injury but in a house is supposed to stop an intruder.

The point of the less-lethal variant of this gear isn't the shape/weight of the projectile. It's the payload. How well does the payload (irritants in powder or liquid form) saturate the target? I can't say. Not good enough in my book if someone is looking to kill me but, if that's all that's available, sucks to be those folks and it's better than nothing.
