    Contract Killer making "custom" paint

Well, they're partnering with GI to make paint to specific "standards" but I'm not holding my breath.

Hopefully it's actually round paint and not just overpriced garbage.

Until paint is shipped and stored properly cradle to grave, I, too, am skeptical if anything will change. Proper shipping and storage will significantly drive up costs - temp control, humidity control, and temp/humidity recording devices at every stage of manufacturing, transportation/distribution, storage, etc.

It’s incredible what a bottle of Loctite costs for aerospace use that has this type of tracking, control, and certification - hundreds of dollars versus what, maybe $20 at the local hardware store.

Alternatively, now that paintball isn’t as popular as the early 2000s and prior, can we go back to oil based paint (or whatever it was) or some other more stable material? I don’t understand how Airsoft and First Strikes can use that photodegradable stuff that takes decades to break down IF it stays in the sunlight, but paintballs have to be vegetable based (or whatever it is). Is it still a volume discrepancy - so many more, bigger paintballs? I’d like to hear thoughts and opinions on it.

Edit: I don’t remember ever seeing a case of paint marked that it complies with the ASTM for paintballs.

Edit 2: PEG is the new stuff, not vegetable.

Was the good paint of yesteryear held to higher storage and shipping standards? I know RP Scherer was some of the best, and I'm sure it was manufactured much better than today's stuff, but were we also shipping and storing paint with more care?

iamthelazerviking Perhaps, but I think it was more so the materials that were less environmentally friendly that made them more stable and have a longer shelf life. Again, using aerospace as an example, the primers we use for bonding preparation and corrosion resistance that literally look like cancer in a paint can work great, but you have to wear a respiratory while applying it and dispose of the waste in a proper, costly manner. The eco-friendly, water-based substitutes the industry is trying to implement flat out suck at what they're supposed to do.

COB It's been too long. I can't remember the delicacies of oil- vs PEG-based paintballs, or lack thereof.

Tom Kaye first looked at using the shell material for first strikes for traditional roundball. It was a commercial failure as far as the game is concerned (Hollywood and Less lethal industries used it). The cost per shot was high and, was a marginal improvement, that folks simply said- I can shoot more regular paint for the same effect.

similar complaints with the marker line, but much more egregious in this instance:
      - This looks like a branding deal, but they present it as some kind of game changin value proposition.
      - New R&D/Formulas, Supply chain and storage management...
      - Where is that expertise coming from? Who did the development? Why would GI not implement their solutions in a broader fashion?

My most benevolent guess is, GI will be selling them a small share of every fresh production batch and ck will supply stores with very limited amounts of inventory.

Other than that its a bag of hot air and just a fancy label on your identical box of paint.

Would be nice if manufacturers could actually agree that specific grades of paint (ie tournament, training, field) have to conform to specific tolerances regarding size (volume), weight and roundness, controlled in an open, standardized fashion. But somehow i can't imagine ck is the party to push for something like that.

Super fresh paint? OK, prove it. Put a bagged-on date on the box.Paint is perishable, this should be on every box ever made, but if CK is serious, they can be the first.

I don't see any way that this will be anything better than what Kore already offers though. Kore already sells like 30+ different varieties of paint. Unless they were sitting on better formulas and just refusing to use them, this will just be something with reserved colors and a unique box from Kore's existing spectrum.

Kore makes great paint when they want to (the stuff out of a truck at NXL events is excellent) but they don't want to unless they can charge a premium. They're not going to let CK screw up their current business model. Either this will be good but at least as expensive as the other Kore paint on the market or it will be mediocre and a bit more expensive due to the branding.

Don't hold your breath on getting full-sized paint. Kore (or whatever Richmond's thing calls itself at any given time) has spent the last couple decades training players not to compare paint size. There's no way that they'd buy new, larger dies just so that CK can release something that makes the rest of Kore's paint look small.

This announcement reads like it was not for us players but, rather investors. The whole bits about "more than a private-label",. "as an industry powerhouse", and "vertical integration".

I have to wonder just what the "proprietary brittle shell" technology is, and who's is it- the announcement doesn't specify that it's their own, vice Kore's. The "custom built for flight consistency" is funny. That could literally mean that they move through the air with the same drag, which only follows given they are all made out of molded gelatin...
