As I've mentioned before, in similar requests, it's my opinion we need to be reducing the number of subsections, not adding to them.
Adding more and more sections simply dilutes what comparatively little traffic we have left. That's part of what has brought PBN so low- there's a hundred sections in there, that nobody bothers checking, because there's no traffic. Which is a catch-22; you go to a section and want to ask something, but see that the last question was posted a year ago and went unanswered- so you don't bother posting. Anyone that still checks, sees there's no new posts, stops checking, lather, rinse, repeat.
We already have a ton of subsections that get minimal or even no traffic. Action Markers hasn't had a post in two months, and only got about three in tot al, all of last year. Tribals has only had two posts in total. The VM section has only had one post all of last year, and that was six months ago.
Personally, it's my opinion we need to consolidate, not dilute. Instead of forty five separate marker subsections, to say nothing of the forty-sixth, it should be pared down to the same as the classifieds: Pump, mechanical, electro and maybe "other".

I get the idea, but it makes finding any info just about impossible ... Try to find anything on Reddit ...
Would it be possible to make "tags" we can sort by?
Like all pump in the same section but a tag for AM, another for cocker, another for Sheridan, another for CCI, ...
So when you're looking for CCI info, you don't have to dig throu a gizilion other stuff?
The miscellaneous section is a mess because it's all thrown in there and it doesn't makes sense ...Love my brass ... Love my SSR ... Hard choices ...

If the search function worked, like at all, I'd agree with Doc. But the search function is forever broken, so I'm here to support the motion for more armory sections.

What happens when you try to search? What browser are you using. The search function works swimmingly for me on safari and I personally am unaware of any issues. I’m discussingp with the other mods to see what they’ve experienced. Any info would be great.Last edited by Chappy; 02-27-2024, 01:25 PM.

One trick for the search function is to use multiple words and quotes. Obviously cocker is too vague, and just typing trilogy cocker gets you everything with trilogy OR cocker.
"Trilogy cocker", in quotes, looks for that phrase, and helps you narrow things down.
On the subsections, it all has to do with traffic. Back in the hayday of PBN and 'owners groups' and the like? Boards like this had tons of traffic- you wanted to split things up just so your posts didn't fall off the bottom of the page in two hours.
But the sad fact is, we simply don't have that kind of traffic anymore. Everyone's moved over to Facebook. Look at the aforementioned VM section- That's basically unused, in part because no one uses it. I just got a fresh load of aluminum VM sideplates in, and I didn't bother posting them in there, because no one goes in there.
And, as I said, that's a catch-22. You don't post there because nobody checks it, and nobody checks it because nobody posts there.
A board like this lives and dies by it's traffic. And I don't mean ad revenue or paid accounts- I mean just that, traffic. People go to Facebook because that's where everyone is.
If somebody stops by here and sees that the newest post was three months ago, they'd rightfully say the place was dead, and wouldn't bother coming back. I stopped going to PBN because none of the boards I had any interest in, saw any significant- or often, any at all- traffic. Why bother checking if there's never anything new?
Speaking personally, I only check the Deadzone, General and Experts on a daily basis- or whatever is of interest in the Latest Topics sidebar. I'll glance at the BST areas now and again, but my pocketbook is so chronically low, I hate looking at stuff I want, but can't afford.
I almost never look at any of the marker-specific sections, unless I'm looking for specific information, or the post is under the Latest Topics heading. I think we'd do a lot better, in total, if, instead of 45 subsections we had maybe four subsections. Those four would see more traffic and attention (especially considering that two thirds of the current ones see almost none at all) and more traffic feeds itself, drawing more interest and attention.
One of my personal pet peeves is the really interesting stuff- the actual mods, the fun 3D printed stuff, etc.- tends to get 'hidden'. The 'custom' stuff is in it's own section, and then the DIY and 3D printing are subsections off that. That sort of thing, in my opinion, should be front-and-center on the main pages. That is, as I understand it, mostly what MCB is known for- us nutballs that still mod and shoot old brass, build custom stock classers, and so on. And yet that stuff is kind of hidden from the casual viewer.
Facebook is not going away. It will continue to pull in the lion's share of online paintballers for the foreseeable future. This site needs to be as welcoming as possible- and as interesting as possible- to those rare few leftovers that want something that FB doesn't offer.

1- a manufacturer who’s made so few products belongs in the misc section.
2- I just searched Metadyne and got 7 pages of results. I’m using Safari at the moment. Who’s having problems with the search engine and what issues? It works fine for me, it always has. And I can’t find any complaints about this in the bug section.
maybe I didn’t go far back enough?

I think the issue with search is more the user of the search then the engine itself. Does everyone here know how to correctly refine a search?

Would it make sense to nest additional “sub-sections” for the less common markers within the “miscellaneous” section?
Seems like it’s be a happy medium… allowing to keep the main page cleaner and allow easier search/organization for the page.

XEMON pretty much. Maybe pull “pump” off the armory as well as “sidearms” since they’re not a manufacturer.
I look at this just like my computer desktop. I have individual folders on my desktop for my larger customers that buy a lot of equipment, and then I have another “miscellaneous” folder that contains the folders for my smaller customers that purchase less frequently.
Makes everything easy to find and reduces the clutter when looking at my desktop.

Exactly. We can put any of the less common manufacturers in there that have completely barren sub-forums (like Niche).
Keeps them all easy to locate if someone wants/needs to and gives a location to put information without it getting lost in the entropy
