Drill bits

So, I need some new drill bits, and I realized real quick....I have no idea what I'm looking for, here's what I'm hoping to find

1) use on aluminum, steel and wood. What material is best?

2) a set that has more sizes then your standard dewalt home depot set

I have a pretty basic drill press and dewalt 18v drill, they won't be in anything fancy

This is a must have for drill and tapping. And for $50 its hard to pass ... well worth the investment.

You can buy inch size, numbered size, and letter size drill bits from aircraft parts retailers in both high speed steel and cobalt types. I think Aircraft Spruce is a good resource for those. They are sold individually.

Get the best ones you can for your budget. Precision twist and Hertel drills are pretty good bang for the buck. For general purpose you want bright high speed steel (HSS) jobber length drills. TiN coated drills are nice but you would be better off getting a sharper drill than a drill with a coating. A set of Hertel drills like Xemon is showing will cost almost 300 from MSC https://www.mscdirect.com/product/details/73285397 If your investing in tools to do work, I recommend spending a little extra to get good ones.


If your looking for individual sizes Shars, MSC and McMaster-Carr all sell individual sizes. Don't waste your money on cobalt unless your drilling Stainless or 1000+ holes

Learn to sharpen them too, if you can (and have hss). Old drill bits can go a long way on wood up to mild steels with a little grinding. It also gives you multiple retries to get your feed rates right on harden-able steels.

The $50 set shown is probably fine for most stuff. And you can get better pieces on an individual basis to replace the cheap ones, as needed.

HSS with titanium oxide coating (yellow) is a good bet
like the 50$ set have that have all size

If you need to drill harder stuff you can buy Cobalt core drill bit with titanium oxide or better cubic boron nitride
but be carefull as Cobalt is harder but more fragile at the same time

For aluminium and wood, HSS core drill bit are good enough
either with titanium oxide or non coated

Learning to sharpen those is a good idea too

Depending on your budget, Tim sells great stuff, but it's US made and a bit pricy. Also just an incredibly good place to buy hardware from, so much cheaper than big box options.

The Harbor Freight stuff is good for most light work but I found they wore out pretty fast and snapped relatively easily when using a cordless. I bought a set a long, long time ago and primarily used them on aluminum with a drill press - they tended to dull faster than more expensive bits. More recently, I used several of them for a home project that involved drilling pilot holes in wood and broke 3 of them. This was over a few hundred holes but still. I ended up getting some nicer bits at HD (don't recall brand) and didn't break any.

I'm a big HF fan, but there are limitations.

I like the big set because of the selection of sizes for the price.
this allows me to have a small high end set.

I make all my pre-dril wit the good bits and finish to the proper size with the cheapo.
And if it break/I'm using it a lot I source individual bit of good quality.

Great way to get most sizes without breaking the bank all at once
