+1 awesome, thanks. The only thing keeping me from buying military surplus MRE’s is their price, all of the reviewers are saying that the prices shot up 100-150% in the last year. Honestly $375 for 24 MRE’s (2022 inspection) is a bit much. Canned goods are like 1/10 or 10% of that. Even if the MRE’s last 20+ years versus 3-10 years. It’s hard to justify. I had no idea they had gotten this expensive. Maybe I need to keep looking at other brands instead of the milspec surplus ones.

Plus I feel better about spending money on the canned goods cause it’s stuff that I eat anyway and I can rotate it every 2-3 years, whereas I’m not one to eat MRE’s for fun.

But if I find pasta MRE’s for a decent price, I could buy some just to round out the stockpile a little better 👍

      Another approach to shelf stable emergency food;

      Get a pressure canner.

Home made food is miles better than than factory packed stuff. The wife and I got a pressure canner in 2020 and used it to supplement our disaster preps.

is that bradleys worth a trip from the utica area?
also isnt there another surplus store nearby?

on the original thread, no doubt you have found many many utube vids on diy mre's
most are very cheap with much better foods than what the " military " mre is

if you live near a military base, and know someone with commisary privledges, you used to just be able to buy them there, you have to ask cause they keep them in one of the coolers in the back

i dunno if the price will be a lot better, but i would assume less markup at least

I think it is, but depends what you are looking for I suppose, but especially if you combine the trip with something else like going to Clayton or Abay or something.
it really caters to the soldier, sewing, alterations, really huge for awards, but has racks of old uniforms and field gear, it’s 99% Army due to the base, a guy I went to school with owns it,
            they do offer online https://www.bradleyssurplus.com
only store left the old Apex army/navy store downtown closed when the owner passed, that is where I bought my first Splatmaster

Just an observation from a practical standpoint, but none of that means anything if you don't have friends, family, or a community of people to back you up. Even to just relate it to paintball, who hasn't seen how easy it is for two experienced players, working together, to destroy an entire team of renters who are basically playing as individuals? How many of us have been taken out by a twelve year old renter because we forgot to look left or right during the coarse of a single game? Individuals are easy to overcome, and everybody makes mistakes.

This article about a guy who survived a complete societal collapse during the Bosnian war gives some good insight into the need for family and community during this kind of event:

Location plays a big part. If You live outside a major populated area or in it you will be in trouble. Most City’s will run out of food and fresh water in days.

Yeah, absolutely, I know, I even alluded to that in my last comment regarding the topic. In any apocalyptic scenario, it would come down to numbers and military readiness. “Peace through strength.”

Look into erbswurst sausage. Many variations and it seems easy to make.

Erbswurst is a concentrated pea and bacon mixture that was used as an iron ration by the German army. It comes in tubes of six servings, just add water.

Dang, thanks for the recommendation, this is a good option to diversify the stockpile

In terms of food storage, it seems that the sealable 5 gallon buckets (with 5 gal mylar bags) are the go-to for raw beans, grains, rice etc

Lowes and Home Depot sell twist on lids that lock on 5gal buckets I Love them for all kinds of stuff. (They are air tight)

The food I ordered from MyPatriot came in stackable containers ready for the shelf.

No mre experience. I went with a bunch of mountain house meals. Another bucket with food. Then the mylar bags, oxygen packets, rice beans, lentils, and buckets.
