Coming Back - What Mech?

After taking a 10+ year hiatus, I am planning on returning to the sport (I’m much older and slower at this point hah). Looking to do scenarios and mech events. Back in the day I had owned several autocockers. Question is should I contribute that “tradition” or should I switch to a different mech?

If Cockers are your thing, get one. Otherwise if you are looking for a no frills marker that will work every time, get an Emek.

Emeks or cvos are also great, but if you like the soul of a cocker, a cocker or nova are fun.

Good news for you, Autocockers are still cool, and parts are still being made for them. So if that's your thing, go for it.

Automags are still being made, too, but it's basically a one-man show, so be patient if you buy new.

If you want something newer but still like that Autococker feel, eNMEy's and CVO's both feel Autococker-y, as their bolts move forward on the trigger pull, and back on the release. The eNMEy is basically just a budget CVO.

Another one I would highly recommend is a Gmek. It's a mechanical frame for the original Gtek marker. They're internally the same as the Emek, the 170r etc, but these specifically have slider frames with a nice fat trigger shoe, whereas the others are swing/pivot. They just feel so nice to shoot. Nice crisp trigger pull, easy to get into a rhythm, and also easy to shoot quick if you need to. My Gmek is my favorite of the modern-ish guns. You'll be looking for them on the used market though. I think they stopped making them in 2019 or 2020.

Autocockers have come along way in the last 10 years as far as creature comforts. Pneumatics are slightly easier to install and adjust timing. a few companies are producing parts (inception, shocktech, freeflow, dye) to name most with a few others making accessories or parts.

Personally if you loved shooting cockers or mags. I doubt you will want something else. newer stuff does not have the same shot feel as the classics. That being said if you end up needing a loaner in your bag. emek is the way to go. light, fast, easy to work on. I keep a couple in my bag and only use them for bad weather or loaners mostly.

I keep an emek just for scenarios. Not only is the marker light, but a 45/4.5 tank will get me right at 750 rounds, which is 4 pods and a hopper. Very efficient. They are also quiet with a longer barrel than the stock tube.

At games capped at 12 or under, my Rt mags are shooting a little up or down as I try to get off rhythm with the peeker people. My classics are more comfortable, but not as efficient or light.

I second this if you don't want to go the cocker route. Gmeks are great cause you get the benefits of an Emek with the fun of a slider frame. They're great.

I still have at least 2 cockers (and parts for probably another one) but I still prefer my tricked out Emek for average scenario 'semi try-hard' play.

Inception Designs has plenty of body styles to trick one out. You'll get a stronger performer and end up paying less than if you go the Cocker route (talking averages here).

That said, I've been working with MozakMachine to build me a new cocker body so... do as I say, not as I do, I still love cockers.

Pick up a nice cocker. Prices have come down a bit and you can easily grab on older cocker and throw some modern parts on it and you’ll be very happy. I loved the Inception Design 3-ways. Very easy to time, especially compared to the old 3-ways. So start hunting a nice body and see where that leads you!

They're all pretty good. I'd say Shocktech is probably the best overall in my opinion but FreeFlow & Inception Designs are right up there too. You may want to steer away from the Inception "Retro" series if you want to swap frames and a couple other "WGP Spec" items. My two main cockers are Shocktech & FreeFlow. I find the Shocktech is dead nuts reliable and consistent. The FreeFlow is a little more dependent on a good paint/bore match. Although, the FF is a little more efficient and feels better in my hands.

They are all very good. Chuck is right that from the factory the Shocktech build quality and tune is consistently excellent. I would say they are the best from the factory.
However for parts I prefer the Inception designs in general.

If you are purchasing used I would personally choose something with a clamping feedneck. It is the one creature comfort update that I absolutely require in my users. I use cockers all the damn time, and all my cockers have clamping necks (except one right feed).

If you get a Cocker based marker, i think the 11/16" valved bodies are the way to go.

To Hellion360 comment regarding a clamping feedneck MozakMachine now offers a neato right feed, feedneck stub, that allow you to use Empire style clamping feedneck. It is legit! A very nice way to build a retro right feed with modern clamping convenience.

This is a cool product. If I didn't care for the ano, or he could match in house I would have him do my old Shocktech. But a good clamping neck works fine for now. It is definitely on my radar for the future.

You could also pick up an older Autococker and just start throwing newer stuff onto it, like I did with my 2k3.

Azodin makes a nice Spyder clone if you want to start cheap and easy. I play mostly with blowbacks when I play semi and it's fun. A little bit more laid back.

Try to shoot an Emek, though. They're quite nice, if uncomplicated and vanilla-flavored.
