    Welcome back.

I was gone 20 years; came back in 2020. Despite being a dyed in the wool Automag guy since I first got one in 1995, my EMEK has become my most used marker over the last year. It just works, and it works so damned well. Light, fast, responsive, relatively quiet, the thing is a beast in a humble, unassuming package. The build-a-gun business model is no longer dominant in the industry. Most markers come out of the box as good as they're ever going to be (and that's usually pretty good, across the board, actually). The EMEK is one of the few newer designs that is upgradeable and customizable in more of the old school way. The stock EMEK is a good, reliable marker. But an EMEK with an upgraded valve, adjustable trigger, better barrel, etc. is a hell of a machine. And if you don't want to fuss with upgrading one yourself, the new Etha 3M is simply an EMEK with the typical upgrades preinstalled from the factory.

If you have any desire to play magfed, the EMF100 seems to be the marker to have. And yes, it's a magfed EMEK, which is also convertable to hopper fed.

The big brother to the EMEK and EMF100 is the Gtek M170R, the mech variant of the 170R. They all share the Gamma Core bolt engine and use similar multi-way valves. If you look around at the mid tier and top of the line spoolies today, the majority of them either use the Gamma Core or a design derived from it. The GC is efficient, gentle on paint, has an ultra fast recharge rate, and has proven very reliable. The new CS3 uses the OP Core, a next generation Gamma derivative.

If you want to stick with cockers, you should be spoilt for choice. No one is currently making bad cockers (or cheap ones either, from what I can tell).

Look for videos of ICPL events online. International Classic Paintball League, the NXL spinoff that caters to mech paintball. GoSports.com has some full event videos from a few years back, though paywalled on their site. You might find free excerpts on their YouTube channel. You'll notice nearly everyone shooting 1) high end 'cockers, 2) mid and top tier spoolies with mech frames, or 3) EMEKs. And of course the occasional player of exquisite taste with an X-valve Automag.

The Automag: Not as clumsy or random as an electro. An elegant marker for a more civilised age.

Thanks again all! After searching the internet for a few hours, there doesn't seem to be anything brand new out there in the realm of cockers (that are actually in stock) other than a few listed on shocktech's website. Any advice on dealing with shocktech, FF, or inception? Everything a custom order type of deal nowadays?

I guess there's also the 'Hand of God' trigger tune that Angry advertises which is touted as improving the pull of the Gunfighter, but I don't have any first-hand experience with it, so I can't comment directly on it. I've been thinking about contacting him to send my STR in for it, but other than changing out the trigger plate for the delrin Killshot Kustoms one, I'm not sure what all else it entails. He doesn't even state a price for it anywhere that I can find.

I offer something similar. I prefer mine over the hand of god personally. I don’t currently have a name for it but I also use the killshot plate. Angry’s trigger pull is shorter than mine, but that doesn’t make it faster. Maybe I should do a video talking about it.

I know Docfire liked it when he was at supergame as he was showing customers what it could feel like as they were picking up guns at the booth.

Throwing a vote in for the Etha 3M if you want the high-speed-low-drag approach on the cheap. I snagged one here and seems like a product improved Emek. Already comes with POPS, the nicer valve, and a aluminum body/feedneck. All I plan on doing for mine is the $15 Secret Pin (or whatever it's called) and a new trigger. Seems like those guys at Planet Eclipse have really raised the bar. Incredible what you can get for $300-400 now lol

I also bought an '05 Prostock body off eBay a few months ago and have been slowly building that back up. Obviously a LOT more expensive than the Etha but you can't beat that classic cocker goodness 🤣

If you’re looking for a nostalgia cocker is great. Cocker tech has gotten better but they still have your typical Cocker issues. Your going to have to know how to tinker and tune. Cockers make fun rec play when you want a nice fun semi. Hopper tec has come a long way so a lot of the feed issues are gone. Rollouts get annoying with paint inconsistencies today.

If you’re looking to play Mech events like competitive most all are shooting the modern mechs Emek, M170R, CVO. They are more reliable, more efficient, quicker, more quiet and lighter. So if you are looking for competitive Mech play you are putting yourself at a disadvantage not using one of the new Mechs. Not that you can’t without one but just something to keep in mind.

Best part is you can get both emeks are cheap and plentiful. I have snagged a few used for friends getting into the sport sub $225 you can’t kill them. You can also get fancy ones built out by Inception as well depending on your budget. Or build as you go.

Cockers get pricy most high end builds are $1k+ gun fighter frames, easy tune pneumatics, clamping feedneck, multi bore barrels. Lots of great out of the box options and cool retro mod builds out there.

I came back after a 10 year break about 5 years ago. I've been shooting a cocker pretty much the whole time. I did buy an emek just to see what all the fuss is about and it's outstanding like a few have said, the Etha 3m is an update to it with all the aftermarket stuff guys have been installing already installed from the factory so that's a really good value. Recently I picked up a DSR+ and a mech frame. I love that DSR and the way it shoots, that's probably going to be my main shooter this year. Lots of great options for guys just getting back who want to play mech now.

This. This is the biggest downside for new Cockers IMO, and believe me it makes me very sad. My Predator M170R was $659 direct from Planet. I spent another ~$190 putting a hAir 45 valve, an Inception Fang trigger, and a soft-tip bolt in it. It didn't really even need any of those things, but my tinker-itis couldn't let me leave it as-is. That's about all you can do to the gun from an aftermarket perspective.

Point being, the M170R's ergonomics are way better than my STR, not to mention it shoots really really nice, and more importantly, even with tank and hopper strapped on, it weights 1/4 what my STR does fully set up. And BTW, the STR was $1500. Except for the the nostalgia of the the clacky-clack shooting of a Cocker over a space gun, there's no way to objectively say that the Cocker is any better than the performance level of the M170R.

Given that an Emek, or even an Etha 3M, are basically the same thing as the M170R, it's not hard to see why Cockers are a very very niche market for mech paintball. And it pains me to say that because I'm the biggest Cocker guy there is around.

Agreed, It really depends on what you want to do with it and if you care more about nostalgia or performance.

It's a bit funny, and maybe even poetic, that what really unites Cocker and Mag guys today is our grudging admission that our Gamma Core markers outperform our beloved nostalgia guns. I love my Automag, but I cannot deny that my EMEK shoots like something out of Tom Kaye's wildest dreams.

Keep yer eyes peeled for a decent Autococker. Deals can still be had, and there are plenty of "upgrade" parts out there, so you can customize to your liking and on your schedule. Hell, building one from scratch can still be done. I've been using Cockers for over twenty years, and every one I've owned has been "set it and forget it". Paint sizes- specifically variability- are really the only thing to worry about.

Take this for what it's worth as I'm a Luddite and think that any marker released after c. 2005 is a hokey gimmick.

I have an M170R that is outstanding to say the least. I've owned two eMeks (one I put a hAir valve in - the other the PE 3-way w/ the secret pin - can't go wrong either way) and they hang with the M170R performance wise no doubt.

That being said - I'll be building my first autocockers once Mozak gets those bodies out, and I gotta tell you I'm giddy as hell about it like a little schoolgirl. As Chuck had mentioned above - the builds will cost me a small fortune vs. buying a used M170R around here for around $525-$550. If you can swing it buy a used eMek as the go-to-won't-let-you-down workhorse to use while you build up an autococker for the fun/nostalgia aspect!

I found my Emek shot a lot like my cocker, people say I'm full of it but I've watched 10s of thousands of balls foy out of each. Emek is my loaner and back up, but I still think it's the best value mechanical space gun.

Something else to consider is your load out to. Due to the efficiency of the New Mech markers the load outs themselves can be much smaller, lighter and tighter. Don’t let me talk you out of getting what you want. Again this is a purely performance view of your question. It really comes down to what you like personally. I have both but mostly use my worked emek the most because the only time I play semi is to play 10man or competitive play. For Rec I primarily play pump regardless what others are shooting. I rarely shoot my cocker honestly been thinking of selling it. It shoots great, sounds and feels awesome in your hand. It’s just I’m playing semi I grabbing the Emek every time.

Don't forget the Automag they make really nice shooters too.

If you want a marker with "soul", get the Cocker. If you want something lightweight with bulletproof reliability, go Emek.
