You would need to top off after each trip and do the math miles traveled to fuel added. If you wanted the most accurate MPG. You are still getting an average MPG for the time and distance travelled. But it’s way more accurate then the one on the dash that has to many variables to be accurate. + you have manufacturers incentivizing better then true mileage through them for obvious reasons. People don’t want to do the math.
Ford Maverick hybrid = great MPG

I tend to look at the trip electric miles more than the dash calculated trip mpg. I find it’s a better way to gauge my driving on the same daily trips.Red OneComment

42mpg aint bad at all... especially over a full tank.
If i look at just one way, one trip to the shore, getting gas close to the highway, i can get 38mpg. but then again, thats not really indicative of the actual mpg. lol
if i drive easy, stay out of boost, and follow a truck, i can just crack 31/32mpg.
which is a good thing since im stuck running 91/93 oct....
if im having fun, it drops to high teens, low 20's.
as for the display, i think the newer vehicles are pretty accurate. they take into account miles driven, fuel trims, injector pulse, fuel pressure and flow, throttle demand, and about a dozen other parameters that affect fuel economy to calculate mpg. as opposed to hoping 2 different gas pumps at 2 different gas stations are set the same, with the same nozzle length, are inserted the same, and stop at the same level.
in my experience, the dash was only ever off by a mpg or two.
the dash might stop at 99.9 but the computer is calculating it much further out; it just stops displaying anything above that. Rest assured, its factoring it in.

Here's an actual mpg update.
283.3 miles driven / 6.104 US gallons = 46.429 mpg
Pic of odometer at start:
Pic of odometer after refuel:
Pic of vehicle computer stats:
-The start of this portion of the data gathering was 22JUN26 at 2:15pm.
-I use the fuel nozzle on the slowest setting and when it clicks off, I put no more fuel in.
-Refuel took place on 29JUN26 at 11:50am.
-I use no air conditioning, just roll down the windows.
-Most of the miles are in town however there are regular trips out into the county.
-I made a well concerted effort to drive the speed limit.
-I drive in Normal mode, not Eco.Last edited by scottieb; 06-29-2026, 03:26 PM.Comment

Nice that thing is more efficient then my TDI especially when you factor in gas is much cheaper then Diesel. However I don’t drive the speed limit, run the AC and have just under 500ft/tq on tap. I wonder what it would get on the Eco tune and not the Race tune. -
Chuck E Ducky I bet the Eco tune and driving a little slower will keep a lot more money in your pocket. -
I’m sure, I definitely could get better mileage on summer fuel as well. Winter time it drops off a bit I off set with some hotshots fuel boosters.

I don’t think the AC has as much of an effect on mpg as the heat does. The truck will run on electric and blast out AC like it’s the second coming of the ice age. I’ve had it parked in a parking lot with the ac going for 5-10 minutes and the engine didn’t kick on at all.Red OneComment

It could be run on an electric pump. Most cars suffer for parasitic loss. When my Allroads AC clutch went I removed it put a shorter belt eliminating the AC all together. I’m not sure what it was actually at the wheels but it was very noticeable. Von Waggon pulled so hard it blew 2nd gear out however it did have 200k+ miles with the turbos turnt up to 11. So at 290k I got my money out of it and then sum.

looks like the electric is doing all the heavy lifting.
if you remove the electric miles and recalculate, it would be closer to 18mpg; which is expected for mostly city miles (and probably what it would be if it were gas alone).
no matter how you slice it though, you still traveled +46 miles per every gallon of gas used; impressive.
im sure you could crack 50mpg with some trial and error.

Yeah, that's the point of a hybrid vehicel.Comment

This is my last tank, took 12 gallons to fill it backup. 38.5 mpg by the maths.

This was a bad tank of gas for me. It was very heavy on highway miles. I'm usually closer to 550 miles on a tank.
The tires I got last fall have lowered my mpg by 1-2 mpg. They are heavier, slightly taller and more aggressive than the stock tires it came with.Red OneComment

scottieb yes it’s a Maverick. The lariat trim has a different dash cluster. -
Changing the overall diameter of your tires will alter how the odometer "sees" mileage. Double check your speed with GPS against your speedometer to see how far off it is, percentage wise, then correct your mileage traveled on the odometer by that percentage. -
Funny you should mention that. Earlier this week I had Waze open and when the truck says I’m going 80 Waze says 78
