    Newb camera

I am thinking of getting a DSLR camera to play around with. Probably pictures of my kids during sporting events and other “action” shots. Found these two cameras on marketplace and curious if prices are in line with used and if there were any reasons to avoid one or the other.

    thanks

Both will be fine... Partial to the Nikon, but that's not a great deal on it.

For the price, the canon is good. Plus the older lenses sell for less. Get a nice zoom lens and you can get great shot of the kids games

I love my Nikon D5200. You can find them relatively cheap for the bodies. I love that I can swivel the screen, so I can let low shots without having to physically get down there.

The lenses you buy will be more beneficial than an expensive camera body. So buy nice lenses that can mount to nicer full frame camera bodies if you decide to upgrade later. For paintball though, I prefer a cheap zoom lens, just in case. When you're on the field, and people see you pointing anything at them, they tend to shoot at you. I have a 55-200 so I can get closer without physically being in the way.

        i have the EOS.
its been a learning curve trying to learn photography. best i can tell, the epic pictures you see on line have all been heavily altered in post...

one thing it did do though, was teach me how everything works together and not waste as much film. i still prefer my old minolta x700 but its really nice being able to see the photo, make adjustments, and take another.

most of my photos are rubbish but, every so often, i get a few that im thrilled about.

Yeah if I get one good/cool photo out of 100, I’ll be happy.

Well the guy with the canon agreed to 150 bucks. Gonna try and pick it up this afternoon.

You can get away with allot these days without breaking the bank, prices for most things besides quality glass(lens) have come down. Most photography industry gear is victim of price gouging just like paintball! If it was just a #4-1.5mmscrew it’s $2, but as soon as it’s a tripod quick mount its $45.

The big boys these days put a $3,000 lens in front of a Iphone15.

The Lens is what makes the image.

Id suggest using an IPad 13” for a monitor.

Any of these dslr’s you have listed will be great cameras. The advantage imho is the tactile controls of shutter speed and ISO, without having to tap and go into multi layer menus. If you don’t need the latest and greatest specs and nostril hair level resolution, get something for $200 bucks and remember to buy an extra portable hardrive just for your photography files archive!

Damn. I wanna dig out my Mini-DV and dslr now. Hook em up to a Atmos Ninja 4k Monitor that records and poof. I’m off!

I think I have a canon rebel t2 and t4? No quality glass though.

Yeah looking for something slightly better than the old point and shoot I just rediscovered. It was having greater control over shutter speed and what not that I find appealing. Now just need to learn it all.

I have a Nikon d3400 in perfect condition I’d be willing to sell. Comes with 2 lenses, battery charger, camera backpack

If you are specifically looking for action shots I would take a good look at Sony. Their alpha 7 series uses basically a point and shot body that you attach their interchangeable lenses to. Very compact design. The mid range cameras are all translucent mirrors so they are very fast in frames per second. Because of the transparent mirrors Sony has worked pretty hard on image noise reduction. So you can shoot at very high ISOs to allow for very short shutter and still end up with a crisp image.

Correct me if I'm wrong -- but with used cameras, you gotta check the shutter count. They have a limit and replacing it is pricey. Thats why people sell their cameras before it goes out, especially if it has some mileage.

have you taken a photography class or understand the big 3? (shutter speed, aperture, ISO)
a digital camera is great for learning how the 3 interact and figuring it all out.
the "sunny 16" is another good baseline to get you off the ground. there are allot of youtube videos on it and they play it off like its a new cheat code; spoiler allert, its not new in the least. its on the manuals of almost every film camera lol. still useful though.

i went from digital to film and to honest, the film camera gives me anxiety. i know i have once chance to get the photo right and i wont know if i did it correctly until weeks later when the film is developed. with the digital, i can take a shot, look at it, and take another if needed. with film, that moment in time is LONG GONE...

Tarsun2 took a course on photography in college and that’s been 10 years already lol. Plus I did it with a point and shoot so I didn’t have much control over settings. So I’m familiar with those 3 but learning how to make them all work together.

as major camera shooter. i would go mirrorless right now do to fact do not make any more DSLR stuff. and if buying used good luck in find like new ex on some stuff unless you got 2 major retailers in NYC. do not use 42 street. also have KEH AND MPB for used camera gear. will test all and fix if need to or sell as is. will tell you if for parts only. but DSLR have shutter count of life aka death. then have to replace shutter. Mirrorless does not have shutter. but has screen that goes up and down that can break. and use to protect the mirrorless sensor. also i am nikon guy. but will not tell you go nikon. go with which brand you want. i do not tell people where to unless you want to do video major factor with photo's then say go sony. but canon mirrorless right now has best autofocus for sports.

Thanks for the advice but I’ll be honest, I’m not sure I understood that first half.

I play around with the canon for now, though Nikon was my preference based solely on name recognition lol. If and when I get to the point I’m willing to spend some decent money on a camera, I’ll do some more research on options.

Right now I’m still trying to find a good iso/shutter balance to get a good photo without flash. I’m either dark or slightly washed out.
