I'm kind of curious, did anyone you know actually get a 3080? A few guys at work wanted one but they all failed to get one.

I want to try for a 3070, but go the brick and mortar route. There's a big computer parts store in town that opens at 10, I can try to slip there around that time from work on launch day if I'm lucky. Not a big deal if I can't though, Ive been without a computer since June so a few more months won't hurt.

Not I. Several people on r/pcgaming and r/nvidia snagged them. They probably haven't even been delivered yet. As for trying to get a 3070 from a brick and mortar store, you need to be prepared for that shelf to sit effectively empty until next summer. The 3070 is going to be the most sought after card among the new ones. Online sales will be challenging, but they'll happen. The only way I think you'd get one from a brick + mortar store is if you have them reserve one for you to pickup. If they have some odd gimmick where they are going to ignore the throbbing demand online, refuse to do pre-orders, refuse to allow reservations, plop them on a shelf for someone to stroll by and pickup, and you just happen to be the absolute first and fastest person through those front doors...haha...Only then will you have a chance. People are losing their minds for these things right now because they're better than what they have and super affordable. Literally anyone that has bought a GPU in the past is probably looking to upgrade to the 3070. And anyone building a desktop or eGPU is also going to predominately target the 3070 as the best cost/benefit. In short, we all want one. I have a 1080ti and I want to "upgrade" to a 3070 (making concessions in some areas, namely memory). I'm not going to sell my card until I know it's obtainable, though, because it could be quite a while.

Have you seen the backlash for the scalpers on ebay? People have written bots to inflate the price so high that they can't sell them.

Yeah. I linked one above. It's nothing new with these high-profile launches. It's not just bots, either - it's a bunch of spurned kids with nothing to lose. I feel for them. The kids are probably the ones most negatively impacted by these scalpers because they're the ones that'll spend the most time using them - by several orders of magnitude I suspect. Combined with poor impulse control et voila.

Good thoughts Siress. I've been thinking along the vain that because the 3080 seemed to be the best value in relation to the past generation it would be more popular. But if people can't get them I wonder if that will just drive interest to the 3090 and probably the 3070.

I'll swing by the store and ask them how they are going to handle it. But assuming they are even getting units for store sales it wouldn't be too surprising if the employees and their buddies are first in line. If the rumors are true that some retailers were only getting 10 units to sell, I can see them never even making it to the shelf.

Oh well, as I said before I'm not too sad. I'm just after 1080p 144hz, so I'd probably just be fine with a now cheaper 20 series anyway.

3090 benchmarks leaked and apparently only about a 10% gain over the 3080. Looks like I might be joining the waiting list/fight for a 3080 and put that extra towards my new monitor.

For most games, that's about what was to be expected from the spec sheet. The 3090 is for those that need dat sweet, sweet GDDR. I cannot think of any games that need that, but content creators certainly do.

Ya from what I saw from Gamers Nexus it looks like the 3090 is very good for content creators, and doesn't offer much for just games. That will also be rivaled once the 3080 with the rumored 20GB of memory releases probably fall next year.

A 3080 or 3070 is still a good buy for most people if you can get one. I'll be waiting like everyone else probably until late next year.

I didn't try for a 3090; I don't even think it would fit in my pc case. Holding out for a 3080 still. In no hurry

I just watched that video last night. Steve is salty over the marketing for the 3090, haha. He's doing a public service for those that couldn't spot this from the spec sheet.

Something that took me by surprise is Linus claiming the GDDR6X has ECC on these cards; Jayz2cents made a similar implication. I find that unbelievable... couldn't find Nvidia making that statement, and I think it would be counterproductive for a gaming card... Anyone know more about this?

edit: to add, not only detrimental to gaming, but detrimental to workstation applications that DON'T require a validated card.

I assume you're referring to the LTT video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDUnSsx62j8

In response to that, I'd say 'not really.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xgs-VbqsuKo

Hmm I missed that note about ECC. That would be pointless for anything but a Tesla card. Maybe it has the availability of ECC, or they were talking about the DLSS 2.0 AI upscaling to 8k and the way it was handling "guessing" and memory?

Couldn't tell you. I never trust youtubers with details like this when it's mission critical. Until there's a spec I have access to from Nvidia, or multiple trustworthy sources stating the same, I'll trust my gut and assume it's not ECC.
