AMD Ryzen 7 3700X3D CPU: thoughts?

I just updated the bios in my Gigabyte 570 motherboard to be able to upgrade my CPU. And ordered a 5700X3D from Amazon for $225 (with taxes). What do guys think? I’m going from a 3600x to this lol

also, I found it interesting that I was able to update the bios from windows with the Gigabyte app. I’ve never done it this way but everything is running perfectly.

Agreed. The price/performance is very attractive. But obviously if I were building a new PC I would go AM5 which supports faster memory. I don’t know if you remember but one of the selling points for AM4-gen Ryzens was the upgradability. I never really saw myself upgrading the CPU though. I would normally build a new rig but my current system has surprised me with how long its been able to play new gen games. And the product line support for AM4 from AMD as well as the performance of the 3D line of AM4 Ryzens has also been surprising.

I’m still on an Asus 1080ti Strix. I dont think the’ll ever make a video card this good lol (relative to the time.)

It’s worth mentioning, as you already know: most PC games are console ports so everything gets made to run on current consoles. I have friends with 3080’s and 4080’s and they’re mostly playing console ports which my 1080ti runs perfectly. But now it’s starting to show its age so I think I’m finally going to upgrade it to play games like Alan Wake 2 with ray tracing.

Another game that caught my eye that’s supposed to be very Hw intensive especially on the CPU end is Dragon’s Dogma 2.

If you can try to hold out for rtx 5000, anything below the 4080 are all badly nerfed in some way. For example the 4060 is only a couple percent better than the 3060. Thats the most obvious one but the whole line up has problems like that.

I haven't seen reviews since they were released but if i remember correctly the 4080 is 50% faster than the 3080 for 50% more money which isn't an improvement its stagnant.

Yeah, I really want to wait for the 5xxx. I’m currently playing on 36” Alienware thats 1440p. So the 5xxx are overkill for 1440p. But I might make the jump to 4K OLED soon so thats my upgrade path. With all the money I’m saving on not building a completely new PC, I might splurge on a new monitor that’s 4K and OLED.

I’m looking at 4080 Supers right now but I want to try playing Dragon’s Dogma 2 with the 1080ti first and the new 5700x3D I’m getting. See how well it does. And I still havent played Elden Ring which my current system could run fine.

I think you will like it. Plus you can resell the old CPU to off set the cost. I would say grab a new GPU but current offerings are meh.

I dont think I could get much for a 3600. I see the 1080ti strix cards going for around $200 on ebay though. I might sell that if anything

I just realized that the 5700X3D doesn’t come with a cooler. I might get an AIO. I was using the stock AMD Wraith fan on the 3600

I'd try it with the Wraith cooler, the new chip will only pull 105w and can't be overclocked. So it should be fine.

Depending on your the size of your case I'd recommend an aio with a 280mm rad. Its shorter than a 360 and has close to the same surface area. Rads have a bigger footprint than the fans attached to them, some cases that have 3 fan spots don't have quite enough room to fit a 360 rad.

Also 280 rads are sometimes cheaper.

Ok I just canceled the order for the AIO. You’re right. I don’t my case can fit a 360. I have a Maingear Vybe midtower. You really think that I can use the 3600 stock cooler? I know that the 5700x3D runs cooler than the 5800X3D but I have to look at some more performance reviews that show temps

I checked amd's product page for the wraith prism and it says it can handle up to 105w cpus so it should be ok. Not gonna say it'll be quiet or 70* but performance should be fine.

I think I am going for an AIO to get decent performance. It does run hotter than the 3600. Partly due to it being 8 cores vs 6 on the 3600.

And the case can fit a 360mm at least front mounted. I got the case as standalone, but on this review of their prebuilt system, they outfitted a Cooler Master 360mm in the front. Check it out:

If you don't mind air coolers the thermal right peerless assassin is like 35 40 bucks. Offers really good performance. Gamers nexus has a video comparing it to aio's.

Nice! Definitely the better solution now that we know it can fit. If possible put it on the top as this case doesn't have much front airflow.

Pumpytrilly1 jetenginekyle I’ve always done air coolers. This would be my first aio. I already pulled the trigger on a 360mm EK aio in all black, (no RGB carnival lights for me, thanks!) I wanted something with good performance and decent DB output. I’ve looked at a bunch of reviews since last night, it’s one of the top performers, up there with the Arctic Feeezer II all while having a very balanced noise output. Also my friend told me that it has one of the most reliable and silent pumps (as long as I mount it correctly). Whereas the Lian Li is actually rebranded and it’s known to have pump failures even when installed correctly. The Lian Li is supposed to be the best WHEN it works but the reliability is not as good as EK or Arctic Freezer (supposedly.)

thanks for all the help, BTW. I’ll report back once I get the aio hopefully I can mount it at the top. I think I can. Tom’s Hardware has a review on the Maingear Vybe case and they mention being able to mount a 360mm up top. Worst case scenario, I’ll return it and get a 280 like kyle suggested.
